He's dead now... during a similar action he missed a step

Speed climbing is like seeing how quickly you can gorge down a fine meal. A pointless way to ruin a fine experience.

Whether he did it fast, slowly, backwards or upside down, it's still too much for me to do. He has more guts than I ever plan to find out about myself!

Guest: Matt (562 days ago)

That's not true. He died free-falling, where he would leap from the top, with nothing to catch him but his climbing rope and and a series of anchors and pulleys that would stop his 1000 foot jump a mere 150 feet from the bottom. He was a bigger idiot than the ponytail would suggest. And he wasn't a great climber, either. He switched to free-falling after some french guys walked through a route (in one easy pass) that took him 50 attempts to set.

Geez. Seriously? You're going to criticise the guy for having a ponytail? Grow up! He worked hard, it's a great achievement, what's the matter with you people?

Guest: Martin (674 days ago)

That's why this guy is dead now :-(

Guest: Kyokushinkai (553 days ago)

As a climber I look at that and die a little inside. Shame the guy died when it was totally preventable, but really... what did he expect? Nobody is perfect.

Guest (351 days ago)

Call me stupid if you like but if he done it in 4.5 seconds, why the f*ck is the video 1m 48s?

Guest: danj (660 days ago)

yeah, sorry but this guy is a class A prat. He worked out his routes slowly before doing it at speed, the routes are fairly easy, but more to the point, he has a horrible ponytail. And yep, he fell and died one day.

2) It's not ruining a fine experience. Speed climbing is a sport, which is pretty much separated from trad climbing. 3) It's a choice of his to speed climb, so it's no-one's place to criticise that. If you're into trad climbing, so be it. Some may see that as boring. I see it as exciting but it is a mere matter of opinion.

Latest comment: "its 4 minutes 25 seconds "

The ropes that were holding him when he was free falling rubbed together and melted (nylon) so it was a rather messy end. It makes no difference if he worked out the routes before hand, or anything like that. 1) A 400+ ft free climb in under 4.5 minutes is a huge achievement in itself.
