That cat is going to wreck his eyes.

It is a myth that TV damages your eyes.

DrSamAberdeen, I am not sure where you did your medical training, but you have to be careful what myth you are trying to bust. TV watching at regular viewing distances is neither great nor horrible for your eyes, however, is worse in the dark. Close viewing (as in headmounted viewing devices, or the kitten, above) causes a significant reduction in visual acuity. See Kozulin, 2009.

DrSamAberdeen should not be confused with Sam (Aberdeen). He is not really a doctor but is a fenland mountaineering instructor, or so I am told.

Someone should also tell the fake doctor that he is borrowing a not so glorious name. You can be sure to attract the outmost profund insults on this site. Worst of all, if the real S.A. finds out, I can imagine all the Lord & Jesus scrolling down again..

I am the real SamAberdeen. My other account - SamAberdeen - was cancelled by boreme, don't know why. I have this account too, however, I am sick of pretending to be a religious nutter, constantly telling people that they while go to hell if they do not folow Sam into the Light amd that I am gods disciple hear on earth. Hope you understand, DrSamAberdeen.

Myth: Sitting too close to the TV is bad for the eyes. Fact: Although parents have been saying this ever since TVs first found their way into our living rooms, there's no evidence that plunking down right in front of the TV set damages someone's eyes...cont.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) says that kids can actually focus up close without eyestrain better than adults, so they often develop the habit of sitting right in front of the television or holding reading material close to their eyes. However, sitting close to a TV may be a sign of nearsightedness.

That is from FamilyDoctor dot Org. If you need more citation, just ask.

DrSamAberdeen, a couple of points. First, my post was intended as a silly joke. You took the bait and now we are in a frank academic discussion, which is alright by me. You cite a popular internet article with the opinion of Dr. Duffner of the AAO to support your point, and correctly state that close watching might be a symptom, not cause of myopia. My point is that putting your retina close to any source of radiation is not a great idea, and that in the dark, dark adapted eyes typically have higher contrast sensitivities and may be at risk damage due to the considerable variations in luminance in tv programming.

I did a search on PubMed and ISI Web of Science as well as the AAO database, and surprisingly, can find only papers by Heydenreich 1959 and Rintelen 1972 directly addressing this issue. The papers are in German, and no copies are available at my institution, so I have no ideas what the conclusions were. Any other search for the impact of tv on eye strain, retinal damage or visual acuity comes up pretty empty (there is another early paper from the Central African Journal of Medicine). So while I am not proven correct or wrong, neither are you, and the opinion of Dr. Duffner of the AAO is only an opinion. But maybe you have a paper hidden up your sleeve that will prove everything! cheers, g
