July, 2005 - For $10,000 and a brighter future for her son, Kari Smith became a real life pop-up ad for a virtual casino.
"It feels like someone is taking a pin and just stabbing you with it," Smith told her son, Brady, seated nearby on the floor as tattoo artist Don Brouse - in permanent black block letters - branded her forehead with the Web site domain GoldenPalace.com.
The 30-year-old mother, who put the space up for auction on the Web, will be promoting the multinational gambling site, which makes the claim - using a little more color and a lot more flash - to be the No. 1 online casino.
"Will it go numb?" she asked. "It'll go as numb as your brain," Brouse replied. "My brain is already numb," she said, laughing.
Smith's ad is a labor of love and actually a positive in her life, something she says her life hasn't been filled with lately: a failed marriage and deaths of several family members - most recently, her sister in a car crash April 18.
Smith said the money will give her son the education boost she believes he needs after falling behind in school since the accident. "For the all the sacrifices everyone makes, this is a very small one," she said. "It's a small sacrifice to build a better future for my son."
Still, Smith said she knows most people won't understand why she's sold her forehead as advertising space. "I really want to do this," she said. "To everyone else, it seems like a stupid thing to do. To me, $10,000 is like $1 million. I only live once, and I'm doing it for my son."
Brouse didn't understand it, either. In his 24 years, he's turned away a lot of customers who want to get tattoos that can't be covered up with clothing. He and his staff spent nearly seven hours Wednesday trying to talk Smith out of it.

I think it's a gr8 idea to sell advertising space on your body. She obviously took this idea from Homer Simpson.

Did someone at Golden Palace actually agree to pay for this lady to mutilate herself? Whoever it was needs to be publicly dismissed and their face shown for the whole world to see how sick in the head they really are. What on earth are these people thinking? This poor woman needs help, not some smart arse who writes a cheque, whilst no doubt laughing their stupid over-paid heads off at the “rest of the world”.

It seems none too bright. There are less drastic ways to raise the same amount of money. Why not pawn your possessions and get a second job? Or focus her time and energy on getting a better paid job? Has she considered what people will think of her?

By doing that she'll give both her and her kid a worse future because he'd get the mick taken and he's already fallen behind and if $10,000 is like a million, why didn't she just ask for a million?

I'm sure her boy would prefer a mum without a ridiculous tattoo slapped across her forehead. Ok so she did it for the money - fine. But $10,000? To do something as truly stupid as that, I'd want at least $1,000,000.

It's stupid. She's only doing it for the money and publicity. Tattoos don't come off, they don't come off till you die. So when she's old and wrinkly, she'll look totallly stupid because whatever she's advertising might be bankrupt.

I can understand y she did it but it doesn't mean I agree. It's just silly. Her kid is likely to get bullied cause of his mum now. It's just silly.

I don't think it says much about the company that bought the ad space on her head, I would pay $10.000 to not be the company who is advertised.

I don't think $10,000 will buy much of an education for her son. (Has anyone sent a child to university lately?) Of course - getting paid $10,000 for a tat on her head - priceless!

What I think personally doesn't really matter... I think she's short-sighted and stupid but she's a grown woman and is fulfilling what she sees as providing for her son. Just hope he makes use of the money! I doubt 10k will ever take the place of her just loving him to bits and being someone he can grow up to respect!

Did she have to pay for the tattoo? I hope not cos that is bad! Not a very good advert for the tattoo artist!

I think the saddest thing is that a single mother has to take such drastic steps to give her son an education. It's a shocking indictment of our educational system and this government's lack of funding support.
