Who cares if he faked it? It's great survival advice. Plus he's hard as nails. I'd like to see you break your back and then climb Everest to prove you're still fit. Moron.

The only real expert with a TV series is Ray Mears. Unfortunately, (US)viewers seem to prefer hyperbole to reality even in shows about real life. A great example of this is how the David Attenborough's "The Trials of Life" was pitched to US viewers using a trailer showing lots of death and drama.

Asa, i recall an episode of survivor man where he recommended eating snow to hydrate yourself. this is actually a bad idea as it lowers body temperature and leads to further dehydration, and as such is the complete opposite to what you should actually do (aka melt before drinking). He also had the materials to melt and drink it rather than just eating it, and yet didnt bother. Survivorman is exactly the same, except that he has lots of tools that he brings with him while doing 'ridiculous thrill seeking stunts' in order to please the voracious american appetite for crap tv. i just have a feeling that survivorman was substituted for bear since the main demographic probably didnt like an englishman telling them what to do :P. face it, neither of these are true survival shows (though they do contain some good nuggets of information), they are entertainment. if you want to actually learn to survive, do a course. to add to your reading list, the SAS survival guide is quite good as well.

Hellion73, i recall an episode where he recommended drinking your own urine in order to stave off dehydration. he had all he needed to create a still, but he just drank his piss. doing this will quickly concentrate the toxins and kill you. if you don't believe me read Bradford Angier's works or the US Army Survival Handbook. the things this guy does are ridiculous thrill seeking stunts rather than actual survivalism. he's a fake and watching him is like watching jackass, don't take him to seriously... "information he is imparting" if you want info watch survivor man, he's pretty good.

Good point hellion! Can I also add that every TV production company has insurance and there is *NO WAY* the underwriters would honour the insurance if he wasn't wearing safety equipment.

Info: The phony bear faked it in Kilauea Volcano also. He taped most of the show a few hundred feet from the highway. Most of the scenes in the show don't exist in the area he was supposed to be in: avocado trees, lava tube, tropical forest are all in different parts of the island. I have hiked this area hundreds of times. I can understand how people who have not been to the area may think it's legitimate, but I was surprised how easy it was to dupe the Discovery Channel. It would be suicidal to follow the advice given by this show.
