RAF speeding ticket

Subject: Top this for a speeding ticket...

Two British traffic patrol officers from North Berwick were involved in an unusual incident, while checking for speeding motorists on the A-1 Great North Road .

One of the officers (who are not named) used a hand-held radar device to check the speed of a vehicle approaching over the crest of a hill, and was surprised when the speed was recorded at over 300mph. The machine then stopped working and the officers were not able to reset it.

The radar had in fact latched on to a NATO Tornado fighter jet over the North Sea , which was engaged in a low-flying exercise over the Border district.

Back at police headquarters the chief constable fired off a stiff complaint to the RAF Liaison office.

Back came the reply in true laconic RAF style. 'Thank you for your message, which allows us to complete the file on this incident. You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Tornado had automatically locked on to your 'hostile radar equipment' and sent a jamming signal back to it. Furthermore, the Sidewinder Air-to-ground missiles aboard the fully-armed aircraft had also locked on to the target. Fortunately the Dutch pilot flying the Tornado responded to the missile status alert intelligently and was able to override the automatic protection system before the missile was launched'.

Heard this story years ago, only it was in wales. Sidewinder is air to air. Live weapons are not normally carried on exercise, as was proven a few weeks ago when a concrete "bomb" fell off a tornado somewhere in this area, as reported by BBC look north

rodmanhattenRodManhatten (756 days ago)

Fighter-bombers have an *automated* air to ground defense system that requires a manual override? And they use live ammo on exercises? It's truly a miracle no one got hurt!

Hmm, I believe that the sidewinder missile system is actually an Air to Air Missile

i doubt in missles story ... but catching low flying plane on radar is possible and when it ends with jammed equipment. Especialy when we r talking about tornados which r bommers and must have training low aproach on targets :)

just for the record, sidewinder is an air to air missile. however i'm sure that if you point it in the right direction it could take out a panda car. whether you would get lock-on would be a different matter entireley

The Royal Air Force is abound with such urban legends. Most are bullshit but the odd one is true. They start out as innocent stories in the bar and 10 pints later they're true. Shall I tell you about the gobby navigator who ejected on take off ? Let me know

Latest comment: "if its not true, it ******* should be! "

Sidewinder is a heat-seeking, short-range, air-to-air missile carried by fighter aircraft and recently, certain gunship helicopters. It is named after the Sidewinder snake, which detects its prey via body heat and also because of the peculiar snake-like path of flight the early versions had when launched.

The pilot may have been dutch, but it he must fly for for a different air force.

It says NATO, there's nothing about the Dutch Air Force

True or not, I quite like the idea of a missile, concrete or real, landing on a Police Radar speed trap. Although I must admit this story is reminiscent of the American battleship warning the lighthouse to change course.

And the real pain in the arse is that the pilot lost all his luggage.

The Dutch airforce doesn't train with Tornado's

fenria71fenria71 (715 days ago)

i really don't care if this stuff is true or not, i just find it amusing

maverickrazormaverickrazor (718 days ago)

Yes, True. Which is why, whether, you would get lock on with a heat seeking missile would be doubtful

maverickrazormaverickrazor (707 days ago)

Who said anything about the Dutch Air Force

Guest: UScopper (739 days ago)

Sidewinders are heat seeking, not radar guided
