Very uncommonly observed. The white floating mass is pumice stone which because of trapped volcanic gas is briefly less dense than water and thus floats for a short time. Unfortunately not valuable but FABULOUS images from these sailors.

there is a lot of weird stuff in high seas. Yachting people I met said they fear to bump into shit at night, such as floating containers that fell from ships, garbage, and there is an enourmous algae field somewhere in atlantic. but without doubt, these pictures are awesome. In darwinian steampunk times, they would have made front page in the news.

Looks like what marine biologists call a red tide. look it up its pretty amazing. Form of algae I believe. we had one in Halifax last year

the stone is pumice, it floats because it's full of holes filled with air
