But that would be true of anyone quoted in the media, not just religious figures. Journalists, celebrities, sportsmen, etc pull more weight by the same logic. The sensible thing to do would be to examine which of these self-appointed spokesmen actually represent the views of large groups of people, and give these people more weight.

The separation of church and state has always sounded like a logical stance to me. Everyone gets their say, but the voice of an archbishop should pull no more weight than the voice of any other individual. In that sense, widely reported archbishops who seek to be quoted in the media need to be counter-balanced by being told to "butt out" by those of us without the same level of access to the media.

I wish non-religious people would just butt out of politics...sound ridiculous? About as ridiculous as this guy. Everyone gets a say in a democracy, regardless of religious belief. Would you really want it any other way?
