The point is that a good mathematician would not have to bother working out 318*75. It should be obvious that multiplying by 75, subtracting 50 and dividing by 25 will give you an answer 2 less that if you had just multiplied by 3.

No no no 'me', its just as Nez put it. Its very simple that way, its just that its only simple when put as 318*(75.25)-(50/25). It was only complicated when he had to deal with only having one 25, but that's really just a rearrangement. The hardest part would have been reaching 318, after that it was by 3, that was why he didn't have a ready answer when he asked for 318 to be multiplied by 75. If he'd done it that way originally he would have already known what that was.

its still impressive to be done like that in 30 secs. 318x75 is tricky and isnt simple arithmetic and he had to have had the idea it would work. it is amazing he got there in 30 secs

Guest, there doesn't need to be two 25's, he simply calculates the following: (318*75 +50)/25.... this simplifies to what i mentioned, and should have been of no surprise to carol especially that this works out!

It just impressess me that he decided to solve it that when he knew he only had 30seconds to do it. Never mind all this maths talk though. Isn't carol hot in a school teacher kind of way? I'd like to solve her puzzle! ( that doesn't make sense)

That really isn't that amazing, all he did was divide 50 by 25 to get 2. 318 * 3 = 954.... 954 -2 = 952. Fairly straightforward really. The only thing that made it seem complicated was that he had to get the 3 by doing 75/25 and the 2 by doing 50/25. People shouldn't be that impressed by basic mental arithmatic..... especially not carol with her engineering degree!
