Why do they wait for the barriers to come down? In our family we call it the Skye Sheep Syndrome. The sheep on Skye are really reluctant to cross the road because they know it's scary. So they wait at the side and watch you coming from a distance. As you get really close, something inside them triggers (I don't know what) and they suddenly dash across the road just in front of you. You could do a psychology thesis on it, really.

why is it that these people always wait for the barriers to go down and then decide to drive around them, if they're going to jump the lights they should just drive straight through in the first place! that guy deserved more than just a knocked bumper

seriously, hitting that piece of wood is not worse than getting hit by a train....those things are nothing anyways, they wont hurt your car.
