To explain: the 5 metronomes normally run at frequencies which are close to each other, but not exactly the same. The moveable base means that if (say) 3 are running slightly ahead of the other 2, they can drag the other 2 to be a little faster. Thus they tend to synchronise. Virtually all oscillating systems will show similar behaviour. That's because the tuning isn't sharply peaked. Imagine de-tuning your radio just a fraction: it still picks up the station's transmission.

This didn't work with my electronic metronome?

Yep, that's university for you - put things on beer cans and look at them for long periods of time, standing up and swaying gently.

Now try doing that with 6 metronomes, smart-ass!

2nd from the left almost let the team down, but picked it up in the end!

In stead of these smart ass comments, couldn't someone just explain the phenomenon?

I presume it was this sort of effect that buggered the millennium bridge in London.

Brilliantly simple demonstration of a very important phenomenon. It's this coupled synchronisation that keeps your heart beating in rhythm. When that coupling breaks down, you get a heart attack.
