I don't know what the purpose is, but I wouldn't assume it didn't want to come back. It may be a method for killing skin parasites for example.

It is a (well) known fact that kangaroos can swim. Interstingly, they paddle using alternate strokes of their hind limbs, unlike the synchronous limb movement that they use when hopping.
