I believe the film shows the lion Elsa and Joy and George Adamson. Joy Adamson was murdered in Kenya in 1980. George Adamson was murdered nine years later, in 1989, near his camp in Kora, while rushing to the aid of a tourist who was being attacked by poachers. George is credited with saving her life, but his act of bravery cost him his life. Read about them wikipedia
