People often think Moscow is not in Europe because they think of the EU as defining the borders of Europe. However, if you take Europe as one of the five 'geographical' continents, then the Europe/Asia border is considered to be along the Ural Mountains. In that case, Moscow lies well within Europe.

Ask any Russian and they will laugh at you if you said Moscow is in Europe. Still good photo's of the city mind you.

That really depends upon which definition of continent you use. I don't think in laymen terms, that the definition is so important.
