Walter Lewin demonstrates mind-boggling water battery
The battery of the future could be powered by nothing but water, after a breakthrough by two Canadian scientists Daniel Kwok and Larry Kostiuk who have discovered an entirely new way to generate electricity - the first since 1839

Interesting effect, but not the "battery of the future" because the amounts of energy generated are tiny. Don't confuse a high voltage with high energy: you probably generate several tens of kilovolts removing a nylon pullover.

A great little experiment, although I doubt it’ll be “the battery of the future”, and as far as I can tell, it has little to do with the work of Kwok and Kostiuk. Anyway, if you’re interested, and would prefer to not think about it for yourself, here’s my explanation of the effect.
