No need to get upset. Just accept the illusion that there is a difference and accept the truth that you have no real choice in the matter. The US was, after all, settled by people who were the "wretched refuse" of other countries.

Honesty is a funny thing...I don't think one could argue that being tortured or wrongly imprisoned for any length of time is okay, but I also don't think a principled person would allow people to exaggerate the facts in order to appear more honourable. If character is an issue for American voters, then honesty counts.

You're in touchy territory with the POW thing. Is there really such a thing as an 'average' POW experience? That story is always going to 'work' with the public and I think any attempts otherwise are going to alienate the people you're trying to convince.
