What's that "his own rocket power" supposed to mean? He ate a lot of chili con carne? It's a small aircraft without cockpit, not really sure where the achievement lies.

umm so the bell x-1, the first aircraft to break the sound barrier, nor did the X-15 since they were airborne dropped from larger aircraft?

Em, I'm not sure if it is exactly "flying" he was airborne to start with! Hence, I would classify this as falling but falling and traveling in a horizontal direction and very very quickly.
