Eddy current tubes

Eddy current tubes

Eddy current tubes

An electrical phenomenon discovered by French physicist Leon Foucault in 1851. It is caused when a conductor is exposed to a changing magnetic field due to relative motion of the field source and conductor

What is a magnet

Guest: Jonneybgood (162 days ago)

Personally, I believe it's f*cking magic.

magnet under the table my arse. the tube is clearly copper which is a great conductor but not magnetic. when the magnet is dropped down the copper tube the magnetic force emanating from the magnet causes the copper to give out it's own opposing magnetic force which slows the magnets fall. think of the magnetic force when you try to push magnets together and imagine a milder push from the copper not repelling but slowing the magnet.

I belive this is completed with a magnet under the table... Kinda cool however

photoshop, my guess

It works by the tube burning up all the oxygen in the air creating a vacuum, "Pulling" the ring up. Get an empty glass milk bottle or whatever, throw in 3 or 4 lit matches and place a peeled boiled egg on top. see what happens.

Latest comment: "where's the egg in this demonstration? I think you may be onto something. Perhaps the egg is invisible due to the magnet unter the table? I hope an adult supervised the matched though "

At 52 yrs I know feel my life is complete having viewed this.

The principle behind magnetic breaking, which is what's happening to the magnet as it goes through the tube. A neat demonstration.
