Of course you can choose what you believe in. You can choose to believe in anytrhing you can imagine. You can't choose what is true however, truth doesn't need belief, anymore than belief needs truth. Truth is factual, belief is up to you. I agree that choosing a religion doesn't make it true.

nobody said atheists were polite. They have just as much right to criticize people and their religions, the same as people with religion have the right to criticize other religions and those people without religion.

It is not OK to harrass any individual for their religious affiliation, even if it is none. If you are silly enough to share them with the world at large then you should anticipate and be prepared for defending your own beliefs. If you are unable to defend your own position you should really just avoid the situation if at all possible by keeping it to yourself.

Wars have been fought over things such as coffee, bananas, and women. Should we forsake them as well? Whether you believe in God or not, you must see that religion has done good things too. Also, the greatest cause of conflict is money, not religion. Religion is the excuse.

althebiker, excuse me but.. MY religious savagery?? Religious morons like ME?? My lies?? One of MY lot?? You're forgetting one very valid point.. I DIDNT SAY I WAS RELIGIOUS AT ALL!! Yet u feel u can hammer down my opinions much like most religious groups out there do when u dont share their beliefs!! Seems a bit like the pot calling the kettle black to me...

althebikeralthebiker (232 days ago)

Nettles - But your PERSONAL choices directly affect me by your religious savagery - I am under threat by you religious morons. You religious types (and I include all religious people) are trying to ruin my life and my planet with your lies, superstitions and hatred. Why should I have to be nurdered because one of you lot thinks I am wrong ? The sooner we educate people properly not to be misled by this insanity the better

Dawkins, Why should i be challenged on my beliefs? Like u said, "it's personal choice" Do i challenge you on which foods or colours u like or dislike? After all, those are YOUR PERSONAL CHOICES. Just as MY beliefs are MY PERSONAL CHOICES!

I think children should be educated about the "books", rather than forcing them to accept at an age where they have no rational capacity

I like the homer simpson quote. What if you choose the wrong religion? Then the other religions gods will send you to their version of hell! in other words, it doesn't matter what religion you do or don't believe in, we're all going to damnation for eternity when we die anyway! So why bother with it all?

and what is considered to be the first corporation in recorded history? The catholic church! Money and religion go hand in hand

My favourite: By simple common sense, I do not believe in god. Charlie Chaplin

Just about everyone who is Religious knows in their heart it 'aint quite right'. If a Saudi Muslim was born in Ireland instead would they have grown into a Muslim still? How, can you 'know' your religion is right without knowing the details of others? At the end of the day it is a personal choice but don't expect not to be challenged on your belief, give cogent answers for why' this' and' that 'rule are important, etc, do not expact us to accept without explanation.

Ace7, i actually agree with u and yes it is easy to say we should just accept each others beliefs which of course isn't the case in the real world but like i said before - ppl will believe what they want to believe and nobody can change that. But does denying god giv many atheists the right to be rude to those who they think do believe? Much like "althebiker" below when he ASSUMED i was religious. Or the person calling themselves "interesting" who has followed me round the site making god jokes after my posts! Seems atheists are just as rude and persistant as religious people.

irishfellaIrishFella (232 days ago)

I am a godless man, I deny god. And yet, I try not to hurt other people, Not because I'm afraid of being punished by a god, just because being good is good. Who has the moral high ground ? Good for Good, OR Good cause you're afraid ?? I will never be rewarded in heven for common decency, but people like us do it anyway.

Ah yes, the greatest argument against religion. A religion is only correct if all other religions are wrong.

Guest (232 days ago)

The one that gets me is the whole 'God Willing' thing "god willing we will overthrow the satanic..." "God willing our enemies will be.. etc etc. Why is it that it never occurs to them that maybe it's GOD'S WILL that they have enemies, or are in whatever shitheap they're in in the first place.

Guest (232 days ago)

Nettles, normally I would agree with you, but most religions entreat their followers to go out and convert, so I can never have a cup of coffee without someone wanting to discuss their 'choice' with me. Plus, there's the inherent myth of superiority all religions infect ehri believers with and the ultimate scare tactic: eternal damnation.

Guest (230 days ago)

"MY beliefs are MY PERSONAL CHOICES!" No, you cannot choose what you believe in. 'Choosing' a religion to believe in may provide some superficial comfort, but it does not make it any more true.

ace7Ace7 (232 days ago)

Nettles, could it be because religion is the greatest cause of conflict? It is easy to say "we should all just accept each others beliefs" but unfortunately, in the real world, this simply is not the case. From the beginning of history till the present day religion the greatest reason for one person wanting to harm, control or change another. The problem with religion is that it just can't keep to itself. It is for this reason it should be removed from all politics. I strongly believe that "In God we trust" just has to go for the sake of peace. The medium of the Internet is allowing atheists to speak out on mass (pardon the pun) for the first time and therefore things are going to (albeit slowly) start changing.

Latest comment: "i believe in God, but i dont follow any particular religion. you can believe what you want, and so can i. God doesnt start wars, people do. "

Guest: Intelligence.... (232 days ago)

Because no-one has killed 6 million people for liking a certain food or colour... Neighbouring countries haven't had decades long disputes and wars over what vegtable people should eat... And you don't get such things as multiple groups of people all believing that 'peppers' are the best, but then splitting into different factions over which colour is greatest and trying to blow everyone else to buggery... 'Nuff said.

cypeqCypeq (227 days ago)

i've got my own :S (maybe not) people don't believe in god they believe in religion.

Interessting how this topic results to so many and long posts...

nettlesNettles (232 days ago)

Intelligence, i'm not suggesting people fight over foods, colours etc coz thats just ridiculous. My point i was tryin to make was "why should anyone hav to explain their beliefs" People fight when others dont share the same beliefs as them (not just religions but politics too) - why cant we just accept that ppl will believe what they want and if we just accepted each others beliefs the world would be a better place
