Beneath Paris there are hundreds of old tunnels that were once a limestone mine. Later, in the 18th century, the cemeteries in Paris became so overstocked with corpses that the bodies would no longer decompose. The stench and disease forced the government to empty the cemeteries. The human remains had to be put somewhere so it was decided that they would be placed in the catacombs. As if the dark, dusty tunnels of the catacombs weren't creepy enough, now the floors are littered with the bones of thousands of people.

The Catacombs are almost entirely unmapped. Because of this, and of the fact that no sunlight reaches the tunnels and many areas have collapsed they have now been sealed off from the public. This doesn't stop groups of people, cataphiles they're called, from sneaking down into the tunnels and exploring.

A few years ago one group of cataphiles found a miniDV camcorder mysteriously abandoned in one of the tunnels. The video the camera captured is chilling. It may very well be a man videotaping his own death.

I think the video is authentic and not some high-concept prank. Who would waste a perfectly good miniDV camera (which were much more expensive years ago) for a gag that may not even pay off if no one finds the camera or if the tape gets destroyed by rain water?

I've been to the catacombs too and there are poprtions of it that you are not aloowed to go. Usually blocked by a metal gate. There's a definite difference between the catacombs that the TOURISTS get to see and the uncharted layers of the catacombs. I really don't think this is a hoax and I truly believe that the poor soul who dropped the camera died a terrible, terrifying death.

I honestly believe it is real. I've seen it before and, based on how deep the man was, it is very likely that he could've gotten lost. This isn't the first time this has happened.

Where did you find the video? I've seen clips, but I'm interested in watching the whole thing.

I don't think the man ran into a ghost or something uberly scarey, he probably just realised that he was low on batteries and lost, and despised that he could move quicker without the camera. He probably just had a panick attack. That would be so scary.

IF that guy actually did die in the catacombs, and he somehow managed to get it on film, it wasn't a ghost that took him. That's just superstitious nonsense, there's no such thing. Starvation, likely, or maybe toxins in the air. Still I'd like to see the catacombs, but not on of those tours. I'd like to just go down there and have a look around, explore. See what's really there. I've heard some strange things, wonder if they're true. As for ghosts: Hah, gaaaaaay!

Latest comment: Guys. This shit is a hoax. Publicity stunt made up by the TV Station. Don't get me wrong, I fell for it as well, initially. But after doing some research, I have second thoughts... It seems like you all are missing some very basic points... Until you have a straight-up and plausible answer for these questions, I will stay sceptical: the camera kept recording until the tape was full and it ran out of battery. Bear in mind, this was early 90's. Aren't you supposed to press "Stop" on the camera's back then in order for them to save what's been recorded? Also, the crew that went looking for the guy spent 6 hours until they found the spot where he allegedly dropped the camera. They saw the footage. Why didn't they break it down and literally head the direction this guy went? They could have taken every corner, every crossing literally, without having to conjure complicated maps and maybe even without an experienced guide... Would have saved them definitely 4 hours or so... The crew claimed that they were running low on batteries about 6 hours in. Yet, they came out just fine after (according to themselves) 12 hours... Low batteries, huh. Why did whoever find the footage hand it over to some American tv-maker? Why go so far for it? Did he even go to the police with this? Look. While there is indeed a possibility that this was legit really a dude that got lost (which most certainly means he's part of the skeletons by now), I am still rather sceptical. There we go. Debunked. Bam.

They found his trail. If they had just followed the video step by step, they could have found his body. Why couldn't they just bring a backpack full of batteries.

because he drops the camera so you can't tell where he ended up after that, plus it is hundreds of miles of UNMAPPED tunnels, so if these guys kept going even though they knew what they were doing could then also get lost, and they were visibally tired after that long down there can't just carry on for days in a place like that.
