Greed... doesn't matter who. It's always the comedians who tell the truth, by the way. They're the only ones who can. That's the job of a jester. Keep 'em laughing Dave!

Deregulation by America and Britain was the root cause of the problem. This opened the door to the greedy and unscrupolous people in the Banking world. You can not blame the poor and disadvantaged for being taken advantage of.Blame Mrs Thatcher and Mr Reagon for deregulation. Please correct me if I am wrong in pointing these two out.In a regulated system Mr Madoff would not have been able to do what he did.

Guest (just below) that's not correct is it? I mean your statement is factually and racially incorrect. Maybe that's why you posted anonymously? The credit crunch is a different thing from the property crisis. The credit crunch is the lack of credit in the economy. The economy is fukked (mainly) due to a collapse in credit backed securities of which mortgages are only a part. A sudden re-valuation of assets caused stocks to crash and the economy to shrink. Because of the shrinking economy banks don't want to lend credit. Credit backed securities collapsed because they were poorly regulated. Deregulation was the mantra of the Republican party and other groups with a vested self interest. Instead of blaming the Spanish!?!?! and black people maybe you should think about the morality of those investment bankers again. Let's hope you didn't have any of your 401K invested in a Bernie Madoff fund? Your arrogant stupidity and clear lack of reality is an embarrassment.

Sub prime mortgages exisst because the US & UK governments wanted "trailer trash" to be able to own homes. Now they blame the banks for giving them the opportunity. THAT'S CLASSIC HUMOUR!

but Popcorn, what about the sub-prime (less than value) catastrophe that caused the re-Evaluation in the first place. I'm no expert (which will be confirmed by several ppl) but that is what I was led to believe

Hi Perv, I think you have a point. However, like yourself, I am no expert and do not wish to claim to be one. I simply cannot abide very stupid (particularly racist) people and had to gently correct our Guest friend. All I can say is that Planet Money LINK seems to be very well informed and their podcasts are particularly educational and not as dry as you might think.
