You should also do a remix on the attack on Pearl Harbour, the Battan forced march of 500 or so civilians, 1/3 if which survived the ordeal--(see link or the sacking of Hong Hong link by the Japanese killing thousands of civilians--- or perhaps the slaughter by the Japanese of thousands of Pilipinos, the hundreds of thousands of American, British and Australian soldiers and the widespread horrors caused by the Japanese in WW2. Then visualize the possibly millions more Japanese and the hundreds of thousands of Allied troops which would have been killed in the invasion of Japan, which would have been necessary if the A bomb hadn’t happened. Then again cry over the bombing of 2 cities that saved the world from continuing WW2

My wife's uncle "Survived" The Death march and the war her father fought in the pacific with the idea to save him. Saw the Japanese cannibalism of U.S. solders, that were captured. The point is, a horrendous war was ended and millions of lives saved.

The Japanese were already working on Peace treaties in July 1945, willing to surrender under the right terms. The atomic bombings only served to force the hand of the Japanese to accept a pre-existing treaty made by the Allied Nations which which was unfavorable to the Japanese. No Pearl Harbor no Hiroshima. The Japs knew that if the tactic of attacking the US naval fleet failed to produce the peace they wanted, they would loose the war. They did and in the form of a black cloud that arose over the city after the a-blast. Too bad, but it's not the fault of the US

My father died in a Japanese POW camp. He was worked and starved, tortured, and died. The U.S. never found his remains. I am now 72 years old and to this day feel an absolute hatred for Japan, and I don't care what others think of that

The deaths of innocent civilians is always a terrible thing to have happen. Yet as all animals, humans fight for their own survival and their own way of life. It may not be right but it will sadly continue to happen as long as there is fear, mistrust, and misunderstandings among the people of the world.

One question: Did the Japanese attack civilians in Pearl Harbour? Were they the target? I have visited Hiroshima in the last month. I learned that the reason it was chosen is because it they thought it didn't contain any POW personnel. Is the life of a few hundred military personnel who signed up to kill or be killed is more valuable the the life of a hundreds of thousands? When the Americans adapt such logic, that attack on civilians is justifiable, then don't be shocked when crazies like Bin Laden do 9-11 attacks on you... Violence can only breed violence ... and terrorism can only breed terrorism.. if you don't want your civilians to be attacked and terrorized, then set a good example in the times of war when you deal with other nations.

Hiroshima I'm not sure about. I realise it may have saved more lives long term, and that the Japanese did many terrible things. But I struggle to accept the ends justify the means. You can say what you want, but I just find the whole idea, and the absolute bravado and confidence with which nationalists defend it, appalling. I also find ti dangerous to say the Japanese did this, so it was not wrong to kill them, civilians did not do that. Would it be OK for Americans to kill British Civilians to fight the empire? No, Plus any nation that is founded on the genocide of an indigenous population should be careful with mud slinging. Anyway, it was the second bomb at Nagasaki that was the definite and undeniable war crime. And Dresden of course.

Odd how such terrible things happened for 3000 years by the Japanese and the world cared not. When the bombs helped end the war, however, people criticized. Because Asians like the Chinese and Koreans seem to be plentiful, their suffering of rape, murder, conquest, pillaging, personal loss, historical plundering, invasion, and mass forced prostitution as comfort women for the old Japanese army as sex and killing toys is politically more acceptable than Americans who can do no right.

Yes, some tens of thousands died during the last two bomb attacks on Japan. And then the war was over. In spite of this laughable attempt to frame the nuclear bombings in the eyes of civilians, nurses, and children... The decision to use such awful weaponry was based on the millions of innocent people murdered, raped, robbed and enslaved by this country's leaders during their insane war. You reap what you sow. Unfortunately, their crimes were not repaid in kind.

No, we dropped one on Nakasaki as well. It was all so horrible, but these weapons ended WWII and the killing that had occured. We saved millions of lives and more heart break. We also demonstrated why no one should use these weapons ever again. Unfortunately, some in the Middle East today, some who have a very different view of life than we do, are acquiring these weapons and we and the rest of the West and the Middle East may be in peril. God help us.

the Nazis didn't view the holocaust as a crime. Same with the bomb attacks on civilian cities, Dresden, Hamburg, London, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The perpetrators of those crimes will give reasons to justify their actions. So will the 'insurgent'. You cannot condemn terrorist attacks if you justify deliberate killing of civilian people.

Lest we for get Nanking where 350,000 Chinese were killed in a few weeks in the most hideous and bestial ways. Women gang raped and shot in the back of the head when they ran away........ This was a weapon used on a country that killed thousands of Americans in a sneak attack, without declaring war. A country that enslaved much of Asia. A conventional assault on Japan not only would have cost the Allies very, very dearly, it would have devastated Japan beyond recognition. Playing Monday morning quarterback with history is pointless and viewing events out of context even worse. The warlords of Japan are the major parties to blame, even the emperor.

People are making to big a deal out of this, did you know that 250,000 Japanese were killed in the firebombing of Tokyo in the months running up Operation Little Boy, as well taking into consideration the characteristics of the Imperial Empire of Japan and every one of their soldiers it was a necessary evil.

lots of valid points for and against here. The US used the bomb to end the war that the japanese had already lost, and simply save the millions of casulties from an invasion (which would of meant sustained bombing and thousands of civilian fatalities). But imagine if the japanese had been in that position, would they have stopped at victory? or used it for domination? Personally, i (a person who thinks americas foreign policy is a bit...well...dim) think this is one of their best decisions

Japan did not accept surrender. In fact after both Bombs were dropped they fought on for two more days before surrendering unconditionally. The dropping of those two bombs saved millions of lives. The lives of American, French, Chinese, and British POWs who were to be executed if the Home Islands were invaded. They saved the population of Japan who planned to fight any invaders to the death. They saved the lives of millions of British, Australian, Soviet and American troops who would have invaded the islands. Before you make an ignorant comment learn your History, from both sides at that.

The crueler it is, the sooner it will be over.” - William Tecumseh Sherman The Japaneses refused to concede, refused to surrender, refused to retreat from the tens-of-thousands of square miles of China, Korea, and other various sovereign nations they illegally seized, annexed, and occupied. The shortest way to solve this problem was to, in a sense, cut the head off the snake instead of nibbling away at its tail (A process which had already claimed millions of American, British, Australian, Indian, Filipino, and Chinese, Russian, and Japanese lives. To fight, man-to-man, mile-for-mile for these lands and the Japanese home lands would have cost untold millions more lives. War is, by nature, inhuman, murderous, immoral, and a crime against all involved. However, there are things that must be fought for. Rough men with guns must settle some scores, and there is no avoiding it. Executing the war with the least (relatively speaking) amount of human suffering is the goal. The bombs accomplished this... and their terrible legacy has contributed to lasting peace, and the warding off of future Nuclear use. The bleeding hearts who so blindly condemn the Bombs and the desperate, disheartened, and bloodied men who used them need to think of the bigger picture. Think of the Japaneses children who would have run at Tanks with bombs strapped to poles. The young men who would have flew jet planes loaded with explosives into troop ships... not to mention the Allied Soldiers in these. Those "civilians" in the cities were working in Arms plants, growing food, and otherwise contributing to the Japaneses war effort. Who is the legitimate target? The man who holds the rifle, or the man who makes it? Let us not condemn the past, for it is just that, the past. But rather let us avenge the deaths of the Second World War by resolving to become a better people, a better world, and a more peaceful one.

Hiroshima type bombs are just used as detonators in modern nuclear weapons. instead of 10,000tons of TNT an average H bomb is 4,000,000 tons. One rocket can transport 12 of these. They are called MIRVs. It's great to know that we've got them to deter the Taliban because I'm sure they believe we would use them

As horrible as the bombs were, they saved millions of lives on both sides, if the Allies had been forced to invade the mainland of Japan. That is the only way to understand it, if you cherish life.....this is what was learned fighting them on the islands of iwo jima and saipan.....and it worked, they surrendered less than a week after the second bomb, and the Russians never attack us after the war.....
