Ryanair recently launched an online poll to ask if passengers would 'stand' on short flights if it meant they could travel for free, or pay 50% less than seated passengers.

Ryanair is gauging passenger demand for its 'vertical seating' which will allow passengers to travel in a secure upright position on short flights of approximately one hour.

Actually I'd be for it, it beats folding myself up for them and having drinks spilled on me. But there'd have to be some kind of guarantee that I get my money back if I have to spend more than XXX time standing due to delays of any type.

Considering their planes have zero leg room, it would probably be more comfortable for tall people with longer legs to stand. Being tallish myself, I'd quite like to give it a go.

I get the feeling they are only diong this to cram more passengers on the plane (probably about 50% more to justify the drop in price). Considering your face is only about 1 foot away from the seat in front when seated, i would imagine it would be quite crammed and restricting. I wonder if it would reduce the chances of DVT though?

If they get 50% more people on for 50% less, then there's no profit!

Guest:  (1362 days ago)
Actually, it would be a loss in profits, 50% increase means that 150% as many passengers, paying 50%. 150% passengers x 50% fare = 75% income.

Guest:  (1360 days ago)
As you can see in the picture there will still be seated passengers, that presumably pay the full fare.

Guest:  (1363 days ago)
WOW!!! One sensible comment in the entire thread. I'm with you Walter, if I was on a short haul flight I would happily save half the fare by standing. My only question is how much space they can really save. Will they have to eliminate hand luggage?

Ryanair by far the worst airline! conning customers for a couple of quid for every little thing really. The head guy is obv a right CuNNt! id rather jump on a bird to go abroad rather than these retards!

Blong Blong (1362 days ago)
Maybe, but they're still the cheapest. Pay your money, take your choice.

butterfinger butterfinger (1360 days ago)
5:38:45 must have been the Directors cut. Long movie. Nip slip probably.

In 10 years time we'll be looking back saying how innovative Ryanair were being the first airline to introduce toilet charging and 'vertical seating'

Guest: Dave (1362 days ago)
With any luck, in ten years time Ryan air will have gone bust and we can all have a great big party.

They'll never live down the ridicule

This is bullsh*t everyone, they have no intention of doing this. In Ireland, every week they have a representative on the radio to talk about another hair brained idea, be it stools on flights or load your own bags into the hold. They just do this to get free publicity and frankly, everyone over here is sick of it, therefore they're not getting as much airplay anymore. The sheer number of comments below proves my point about getting people talking!

Guest: Ray (1362 days ago)
Some of the flights I've been on, I wonder what they'd charge just to sedate me and stack me in a bunk. Wake up on the other end and wonder where the hell I am.

Guest: muffinman (1363 days ago)
why not just strap passengers to the wings?

DeViant DeViant (1362 days ago)
Why not sell the crew seats. Crew could sit on passengers' laps.

Guest: walt (1362 days ago)
on uber short flights like, island hopping in Hawaii. i'd do it for half the price.

Guest: bob (1363 days ago)
Looks like a good way to develop deep vein thrombosis

butterfinger butterfinger (1361 days ago)
How do you figure that Bob? It's common knowledge that DVT on flights is caused by the poor air quality, not your body position.

Guest:  (1363 days ago)
This has got to be a wind up. You'd be crippled on a heavy landing.

Guest: Simon (1362 days ago)
It's easy publicity on Ryan Air. It wouldn't work in terms of health and safety but it's a great viral marketing campaign which works again and again for them.

Knobette Knobette (1362 days ago)
What about my hand luggage, where would that go?

Guest:  (1362 days ago)
In your hand of course - just like on a bus

Knobette Knobette (1361 days ago)
oh... ok :)

What if you're small and can't touch the floor?

Guest:  (1362 days ago)
Whats the crash position? where do you put your head when the plane falls out of the sky?

Guest: Anfine (1361 days ago)
Between your legs... as you kiss you a*s goodbye!

Guest: the paddy bastid (1308 days ago)
Latest comment: if you're going towards the ground like a dart the crash position is splatted on the place in front of you. only if you're standing you're in a less stupid looking position when they find your crispy corpse.

Guest: Simon (1362 days ago)
If the plane falls from the sky, I think the crash position includes wetting oneself...

Penguinemz Penguinemz (1363 days ago)
Don't have seats at all, let people tumble around like drunken fools, It would strain your legs after a while especially if you were flying from New York to L.A

Guest: billybob (1362 days ago)
even though rayanair dont fly from new york to l.a.

Guest:  (1363 days ago)
It would give a new meaning to crash positions.
