Ahh the old days. Although it's too dependent on the natural elements and this idea has also been tried out in a larger scale. Ireland had a model like that family's. Then we had a plague and it wiped out 50% of the country through immergration and death. In moderation it's a good idea :)

Ireland's problem was its reliance on one crop: the potato. Okay, also the imposed imperialism that ruled over her too...But, this family isn't relying on one crop and will likely never go hungry; in the same way that it's unlikely that you and I will ever go hungry. The only difference is that they don't work as hard (are not slaves) as you and I.

Yes it was due to reliance on one crop, but a source of food none the less. The point i was trying to make was that the natural elements can cause this model to be blown apart, without good weather the food is affected and that in turn affects the little income they make. If the weather does not get better they would have to do something else or struggle to survive!

It was a fungus that caused the Irish famine; one that only affected that one crop. This family relies on many different crops: some are heartier than others, able to withstand extreme climate changes, and some resistant to fungi, bacteria, pests, etc. The point being, that if a family with such a plethora of different crops were to lose ALL OF THEM because of weather, then we'd all be affected by food loss as the same thing would be happening to the food that is supplied to supermarkets.

Latest comment: I am in shock. I never thought that there were actually intelligent Americans. Sooner or later, when the black stuff runs out this lifestyle will become a lot more common

What a stupid comment... just because they're not "wasteful" doesn't mean they're "poor"! If more people in the USA and Europe were as frugal as this family is, they wouldn't be stuck so deep in debt! Get a life, not a credit card!

I was actually refering to the ignorant way in which the presenter treated the family. Most of the world lives this way and have done for thousands of years yet he treats them like they are idiots. Maybe my comment deserved speech marks.

Ok, then I MIGHT have misunderstood your comment. However, I really didn't have the impression the presenter treated the family in any particular way... seemed very neutral to me.

I've always been fascinated by this idea. I couldnt do it to their extent myself but I like the idea of trying to move closer to that principle. Fresh food means no pesticides. Less trips to the store. saving $$$ and living healthier. Not too much we can do with a balcony and a condo but we got our tomato plants growing fine. Its a start

They should all be put in jail for violating the instances of a civilized society. This is wrong, in a word, it isn't right because it anarchirizes society as we know it because they do not need to rely on others and are communists who aren't sociable. They probably aren't religious either and should be locked up either into jail for several months or years or to the mental institution.
