Carl Sagan explains the 4th dimensionCarl Sagan explains the 4th dimension

We can't imagine it, but we can think about it. Astronomer, astrophysicist and superb communicator Carl Sagan draws us into the fourth dimension even though we are trapped in the third.

Two dimensional being when lifted from his plane of existence wouldn't be able to see other two dimensional beings in his plane, it would only drift from one two dimensional space to other.

and does a fourth dimension exist (except for time)? Is it necessary to explain any scientific theories apart from string theory?

Time *is* the fourth dimension. This concept, proposed by Einstein, is necessary for quantum theory (which means chemistry, advanced materials and particle physics etc) and relativity (satellite communications, space physics and fine measurements) amongst others.
