Why don't we make more use of the sun?

Why don't we make more use of the sun?

R5800 Solar Death Ray, made from a satellite dish, covered in over 5000 one centimetre mirror tiles. Properly aligned, it can melt steel, vaporise aluminium, boil concrete, and turn dirt into lava. The power of 5000 suns from an ordinary fibreglass satellite dish.

saves 9000 liters of "waste" oil a year....thats 56.6 barrels of oil. they are not saving enough to even pay the bill that keeps the lights on in that facility...the carbon footprint of that operation has to be a thousand fold of what they are saving. just more feel good efforts to stroke there own egos. type one thinking in action. look at me, I care....and if you don't, I'll tax you out of existance for I am the new God.

So the town gets a great deal of its hot water and heating renewably but it wouldn't be enough to 'keep the lights on in that facility'. It's a shame you're not in charge of our energy policies, you're clearly a genius. You sound almost gutted that those 56 barrels aren't being burnt. Everybody stop, nobody try to change anything, everything is fine...

It would be better if you electroplated it with highly reflective chrome or had a purpose built mirror. Also, if you kept the dish's arm, but fitted an arrangement of crystal prisms to the end of it, you could aim the beam anywhere you liked: Hey-presto, you have a prism tank from C&C Red Alert 2.

Since the dish is already the right shape for focusing electromagnetic radiation, would it have been easier using reflective metal foil and glue... Add a lens at the focal point and voila - long range pain

Latest comment: The dish had a rough surface texture, so it wasnt feasable to coat it in foil or mylar. That and with a "multi-facet" reflector, I was able to get a much greater concentration power than any parabolic mirror or lens could make.

Film 2: the town's houses still need conventional heating equipment. So how much extra energy was required to make the 18,000 sq.m of panels, piping and plant rooms etc.? It's only economic because of govt. grants, tax breaks etc. You're not going to run a country on this low grade energy. Nuclear is still the only future I'm afraid.
