Wooden ladders for San Francisco firefighters

Wooden ladders for San Francisco firefighters

San Francisco Fire Department crafts its own wooden ladders to age old traditions, not because of an unwillingness to modernise, but because they work well. Sometimes things don't need fixing.

I'm not convinced. I live in SF and the Fire Department is probably the worst city department there is when it comes to protecting high-paying city jobs, all because they are precious firemen and politically untouchable. OK, old fashioned wooden ladders may be the best but I am that having city works build them is not. Outsource the job. i bet it's all about job protection.

And wooden ladders never get cold enough in winter that you can get a bare hand 'welded' to them, like the crappy, whippy, throw away alloy ones.

Of course, metal ladders are not really colder than wooden ones are they. They just conduct your hand-heat away quicker, and so ironically actually become slightly warmer than the equivalent wooden ones. So there.

Physics aside, genius - try explaining that to a firefighter who has put a damp hand on an alloy ladder in sub zero temperatures and ripped skin off as they pull away. It's effing painful! So there.
