The truth is in the last part - which makes it all a little redundant anyway. There is no dialogue to be had between atheists and those of faith. Not so much because they don't agree but because they aren't operating on the same plane of proof. I myself am agnostic but I came across this quote in a book [Gilead]: "'In the matter of belief, I have always found the defenses have the same irrelevance about them as the criticisms they are meant to answer. I think the attempt to defend belief can unsettle it, in fact, because there is always an inadequacy in argument about ultimate things. .... Nothing true can be said about God from a posture of defense.'
That sort of summed up the problem with the argument to me.

Faith that life began spontaneously? What is the evidence that life appeared through natural processes? If we know the conditions required can we demonstrate the synthesis of life from inanimate matter? If not then we have faith that this must have happened. Lab experiments, so far, have not reproduced the 'creation' of life from non living elements but we 'believe' it must have been so. Dogmatism is not restricted to religion.

"we 'believe' it must have been so?" Not really. The answer to "how did life begin" is "we don't know." That does not give you the right to just make up stuff and claim it is true.

"Faith" is simply a polite term for "Delusion". When all evidence and reason lead you to one conclusion, and yet you choose another - this is delusion. Pure and Simple.

Guest: (849 days ago)
Well, in your second sentence you are right. And faith may be delusional. But what if it concerns anything beyond scientific evidence, such as moral values or anything beyond the reach of science (f.i. beyond anything an event horizon)?
ReplyVote updown (1)Spam?

Guest: (849 days ago)
Moral values beyond scientific evidence? Why do you say that? Is it because believers always ask "where do morals come from?" but never listen to the answer "We evolved them. All social species have morals."
Anything that has consequences in the real world can be studied and used in evidence. If god can't then it's because he/she/it/they has no real existence.
This is where I came in.

There was nothing said like: Morals come from religion. But: You have to believe in yours. As well as any statement on anything beyond an event horizon (such as a black hole or the big bang) is not scientifically testable and thus not subject to science (rather metaphysics). Its just that religion is one way to deal with things where there is no absolute truth (to the extent science can produce absolute truths) to be found and where you can only believe.

Easier is sometimes right. If you're trying to work out the hypotenuse of a right angled triangle then I'd recommend Pythagoras' theorem every time. If you want to divide world views into two then it should be evidence based and faith based. There is no point arguing with those who, by definition, have no regard for evidence.

Again I'd recommend the works of Pythagoras if you believe there are only two sides to everything... Anyone who claims there absolutely is a God is fundamentally dishonest.

Yes. However if you're proposing that the universe is created by a super being that needs no genesis then the burden of proof is yours. It is still reasonable to suggest that there is no god(s) as no one has been able to provide any evidence that goes beyond, "I kinda feel like there's a God". An invisible teapot has as much chance of being the creator; its impossible to prove its not. But you'd want some reason why you should believe me, right? You wouldn't just take it on faith.

Some people believe truth can be found by looking to the past kind of like a child looking to a parent for answers.
Some people have observed that truth is intangible and work toward a future that reveals it.

It's only a matter of degree that separates them.

Poor Mark. Hopefully he will reflect on this and move on in life but there are others (of all religions) who will continue to think like Mark. Unfortunately history has shown us that many are prepared to make people who believe differently suffer with their lives. The future is sadly likely to be no different. All in the name of religion.

Ideas - religious as well as others - have always been abused. Even science has been a pretence for crimes (f.i. Unit 731). But religion can be incentive to good as well (think of many priests hiding jews in Nazi Germany). But if the same ideas can be used for good as for evil, you should rather argue against spreading hate, and not against religion in general.

i hate atheists like this. So completely self involved in their own opinion they cant see how blind they are. if they were truely wise they would see the hippocracy in what they say (particularly the one of the left).
Anyone with a basic understanding of logic knows that all lines of enquiry must start with faith, faith in propositions, faith in methods etc. Without faith the entire structure of logic, language and experience come crashing down.

I'll assume you took it on faith that i actually meant hypocrisy despite writing the wrong word. My point was its nonsensical (and actually downright destructive) to go on some sort of crusade to rid the world of faith and replace it with reason and evidence. If anything most atheists probably have too much faith in the scientific method, trying to apply it to everything when its not really useful to do so.

Latest comment: Money paid to protect the Pope or support the Queen does not affect the national deficit if the money is spent locally and remains in the local economy. The question is whether the money might rather be spent on medical research, say. But then the same applies to money (and energy) wasted on broadcasting hundreds of brainless TV channels.

Religion is not harmless - it is dangerous stuff, and unchallenged religion is even more dangerous. Unchallenged religion leads to political absolutism and the abuse of power. It stifles creativity and freezes social progress. Its simple-minded moral strictures trap humanity in a straight jacket. Since religions always get their energy from suppressing and diverting the sex instinct they engender sexual guilt and personal unhappiness. Anyone who can challenge religion is a hero in my book.
