50W light bulb from a plastic water bottle!

50W light bulb from a plastic water bottle!

An engineer in Brazil has discovered that water bottles filled with water and bleach can work remarkably well as light bulbs. Obvious benefits are that it's clean and almost free, but also that the light is diffuse and natural.

Neat. Similar to a light pipe, except it's not a pipe. The only problem is finding the 35 mm film canisters nowadays - we've all gone digital. I wonder why they are necessary?

It says in the video - to protect the bottle cap. Maybe they aren't UV resistant and the film canisters are.

The bottle caps aren't UV proof, and will eventually shatter.

Did you happen to notice that many houses in that country do not have windows in parts of the house so even during the day some rooms are very dark. I work in a office that has windows but we still have lights on during the daytime. Putting a couple of bottles of water in the ceiling is a much cheaper alternative to putting in windows. That fact is that they probably can't afford windows

Do you have any idea how big the sky light would have to be to provided the same amount light as those 2 bottles? It would have to be be much larger and sky lights are really only effective with direct sunlight. Sky lights are very expensive to buy and install. Do think they have the money for that? The bottle sky lights are awesome, I have seen something similar used on ships but they are made out of very thick glass.

Now I'll optimize the invention by inventing a hole in the ceiling..then you save the bleach.

A hole in the ceiling would have to be much, much larger to get the same amount of light as the small holes used with the bottles. Plus it will bring light into the room at any angle the sun is set at, until the sun goes down.

well one major flaw would be that they can't be used at night which is when you want a light bulb.

Did you happen to notice that they have rooms that have no windows, so the rooms is dark even during the day?? I work in a office that has windows and we have the "light" on during the day time working hours. Obviously the light bulb has not come "on" for you.

You missed the point entirely about needing a light on at night

Latest comment: Did he say that they turn themselves off at midnight? I thought it was just like a skylight but if they last until midnight then that is a whole different story. Can someone shed light on this please...
