Christopher Hitchens and the afterlife

As a dying non-believer, will Christopher Hitchens now reconsider his views on the afterlife? A polite question not taken too well. Excerpt from a debate with Sam Harris and Rabbis David Wolpe and Bradley Artson Shavit.

I'm a Christian. If Chris is right and I'm wrong, we both lose. If Chris is wrong and I'm right, Chris loses. Either way Chris loses. Quite simple really!

Latest comment: Frankly, spending 10 minutes, let alone an eternity, with most modern day Gods (esp. if he's casting my brothers and sisters into a firey pit over his bruised ego and unrealistic expectations), does Not sound like a "win" to me. Be that as it may, if Chris "loses," as you put it, he'll be Dead and won't care, hence losing nothing (ex. the aforementioned hell thing, which clearly be lame). However, if he is right, You are actually losing quite a lot in the one life you Know you have to live, vs. what may or may not come after, which is beyond HIGHLY unlikely. And seriously, living for an Eternity?! Billions and billions of years with a spiteful "father" and These People (and of course, everyone else who has ever lived or will ever live)?!? Oh, hell no. I'll take dead for the win. lol.

I'd have to agree with him that it is presumptious to even ask the question. We atheists don't ask it of believers and try to get them to accept just before they die that all they're going to become is compost; the sheer gall of asking that question absolutely deserves an equally arrogant answer.

I respect his abilities - what a good speaker! I would also respect his views if they were correct. The trouble is, he has no idea. All he has is faith.

What's arrogant about being certain of your views? He is an atheist who can defend, eloquently, why he has no belief in a god. I don't see anything arrogant about being rational and intelligent.

It's not the certainty, that's a bit irrational in the context but no more so than the people he's set against. It's his presumption that education (particularly what passes for education nowadays) helps you to come to correct conclusions on metaphysical matters. He's a bit like someone who's rich or famous and thinks he must therefore be intelligent.

But isnt education key to being able to comment on metaphysical matters? An open and educated mind is surely best equiped and justified to question faith and belief. Because you know what - there might not be a god, actually evidence says its highly unlikely - so surely that gives us the right to question if its true or not. The whole point of a western education based on science, arts, maths, literature is to give a wide view of the world and how things work in it and beyond - its the un-educated who are given just the scriptures of which ever god they choose (mainly dependant on geography) who have the blinkered unquestionable view

You have a rather quaint idea of what education amounts to nowadays. Fifty years ago many institutions of higher learning were still teaching you how to think, now they teach you what to think. They pretend not to of course but that's what they do.

Now, Christopher, if you'll just denounce the kabbalah, talmud, mandala, zen etc. and every other deceiving quasi-metaphysical tradition of man which you, as a public media pundit have pronounced through and condemned others with...you will never avoid physical death but you may avoid eternal damnation.

Try asking them to leave their address and say you'll call on them while they're at home, relaxing, to irritate them with your views for no good reason. Or you could just tell them to f*ck off and shut the door on them. If one doesn't work, the other will.

Big mistake - don't even mention God or religion to the professional God-Botherers. That just leads them to think they can spout their version of mythic bullshit at you. Be polite but firm and shut the door; they're used to it (or should be).
