Alex, not just a talking parrot, but also smart

African Grey parrot Alex (1976 - 2007) was the subject of a 30 year research programme into whether a talking bird could understand the words it uttered. Animal psychologist Irene Pepperberg wrote that Alex's intelligence was on a par with that of dolphins and great apes. She also claimed that Alex had the intelligence of a five-year-old human and the emotional level of a two-year-old at the time of his death. His last words to Irene Pepperberg were, "You be good, I love you". wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_(parrot)

Poor animal stripped of his wings. Only parrots in captivity ever start talking because they are lonely and have the urge for company.

Not the healthiest parrot I've seen and died considerably young for a parrot; they can live longer than some humans (50-65 years old). I personally don't like to see animals as part of laboratory experimentation, even if it is within animal psychology. I bet he was never permitted to fly and most probably had his wings clipped to prevent him from flying. With positive reinforcement training, he would have been able to fly free daily, knowing full well he would return for food, and if he had another parrot companion, he definitely would have returned.

I've worked with people who aren't as bright as that parrot - alive or dead, come to think of it.
