Ann Coulter - A Glowing Report on Radiation

Right-wing Ann Coulter makes Bill O'Reilly look like a liberal when she claims that radiation is good for you. She is describing 'radiation hormesis', which is the hypothesis that chronic low doses of ionizing radiation is beneficial to human health. According to Wikipedia, proponents of radiation hormesis accept that high radiation levels are harmful; that intense artificial radiation, for example, is toxic. But they believe that low levels of radiation, comparable to the natural background level of radiation, are not harmful. Radiation hormesis has not been accepted by the United States National Research Council or the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements.

She is actually right in that case studies have shown that an increased amount of radiation is beneficial. However what this exact dose is is uncertain. So don't bathing in gammas just yet. And O'reilly is just a provocative entertainer. It scares me that there are people out there that think he is credible.

I wonder how much she's getting paid by the nuclear power industry for this. Aside from her ridiculous arguments on why radiation is good for you, it's not true that the media is generally saying that the tinyest amounts will hurt you. From what I've seen they've made it clear that some levels are natural and even several times the natural level is ok, but when it gets to a certain point there is risk. It makes sense to make the approved level considerably lower than the point where you are actually going to get radiation sicknes.

Not watching this clip. O'Reilly is a self obsessed, poorly informed, quasi-religious ignoramus who needs to be removed from public broadcasting. I have such contempt for him that the mention of his involvement is enough to put me off.

o'reilly is such a dumb person, first cancer is no infection, second, 9-11 was not an incident where people were exposed to radiation
