Stephen Fry, what do you believe?

Stephen Fry prefers to describe himself as a humanist rather than an atheist even though he believes there is no god. "You can't just say there is a God because the world is beautiful. You have to account for bone cancer in children. You have to account for the fact that almost all animals in the wild live under stress with not enough to eat and will die violent and bloody deaths."

I once had a philosophy professor ask the question about existence. I'm paraphrasing, but roughly this: "if there's a perfect universe, who's to say that this imperfect world and how we deal with it aren't the way to the perfect one?" I still ponder the question.

Latest comment: Stephen's argument that one possibly cannot believe in God when one sees a parasite bore into the eye of a lamb is quite ludicrous! Hasn't that parasite a right to live and to complete its life process just as much as the lamb. We do not live in a world where the lamb lies down with the lion, yet; this is an imperfect world for whom we wholly rely on nature to achieve its course, without such, we would be unable to survive. Ecosystems are built upon the bacteria, parasites, predator and prey animals. We have to accept that without any of these organisms, we as human beings might live briefly, but die in a baron world. As to his argument about cancer; cancer is just another arms race, we as humans are able to overcome it with knowledge and science, eventually, just like we overcame polio and cholera. Cancer is simply a contemporary disease which we are trying to eradicate. God does not give anyone cancer, the environment does. And who controls the environment? Human beings do, therefore, if I use the same argument as Stephen does, I simply cannot believe in humans! LUDICROUS!!!

Let me guess you believe in 'god'. Catch up to the actual real world and current times and life...before religion destroys it all!!!

Why should God design the universe to give pleasure to people or animals? I don't get how this is any more an argument against God than the pleasures or beauties of the world are an argument for him. Whatever God is up to it doesn't have anything to do with maximizing pleasure or life expectancy.
