How does he know that the memories lost when part of the brain is damaged are lost forever? Maybe they go to some place where they are kept in some form of limbo untill the rest of conscientious leaves when the brain is totally destroyed. Maybe this is what they mean when they say 'limbo' I prefer to live in blind hope than live by limited information.I will be proved right what ever happens.ie..If there is nothing I will be proved correct but will not exist to say so. If there is something and I was wrong. I will be a winner anyway.
