As an American who lived in London for years, I'm surprised that so many of my English friends would be angered or horrified by this. With continued large-scale football hooliganism, idolatrous mass worship of the royals (which many in my country share, by the way) and some of the elements in the recent cuts protests, you can't be surprised by what large crowds get up to sometimes. Mobs, even well intentioned mobs, sometimes get out of hand. While no fan of American foreign policy, any more than I am of Britain's own recent legacy of imperialism, I still can sympathize to a degree with these students. Don't forget that they're of a generation who's childhood memories contain vivid images of not just towers falling down, but people jumping to their deaths from those towers. That, along with early memories of the stories of the victims and the accounts of the witnesses, make for some pretty strong childhood trauma that cannot be dismissed. Having said that, I can assure you that many people here, including university-aged students, are uncomfortable with a lot of the jingoism and celebration that others are engaged in. We're a big country and there are many different ways in which Bin Laden's death is being absorbed.

When people in the middle east takes to the streets like this, we lean back and tell each other how stupid they are. How emotional and irrational their behavior is.... I too beleive it is good that Osama was "caught", but to freak out like this in "celebration" og his death?! Makes me wonder....

Latest comment: How embarrassing. It's as if the wicked witch of the west had been killed and everything will be fine from now on. 'The world will be safer now'? Fox News headline 'US on high alert against terror attack'.

Although I appreciate Americans think their country is the best in the world, I could not possibly agree. I think that's what offends people in the end, their wanton disrespect of other countries. I suppose we shouldn't be surprised about that, since the majority of the USA have not travelled outside their own state, not to mention their own country. Although we British would not presume to think our country is the best, because is certainly is not, but we love it just the same. Teenage behaviour from a very young country, whilst we're somewhat more mature in old blighty. Just my opinion, that's all!!

Filmaddict you like me are entitled to your opinion but to actually think that britian is somewhat a better nation than the u.s. because it is more mature is pushing it a bit. look at your country's history which i think most english dont like to do because of the shame they would feel because of what british imperialism has inflicted on the world. Let me quote the chorus of a song to you. "And you dare to call me a terrorist while you look down your gun When i think of all the deeds you have done- You have plundered many nations, divided many lands, You have terrorized their peoples, you ruled with an iron hand, And you brought this reign of terror to my land."

I think you've just contributed to my argument. Knowing the historical attrocities conducted in our name, in the UK, one could say that we are certain our country is not the 'best', but which country truly is? I don't think any 'mature' country (i.e. one with a history of much more than 235 years) would ever claim such.

Who needs the mid-west, rednecks or Fox News if this is the way students react? We're off to hell in a handcart and the Untied States of America has the handles. And no, you dumb-arsed Merkan, that's not a spilling misteak.

Oh thats right and a million people coming out on the streets of london to watch a drain on the economy get married is really not pathetic. And did not your own students act like complete animals and carry out wanron vandalism while supposedly protest about the cost of education or is that all Americas fault as well

Guest:  (746 days ago)
Yup. We much prefer wanton vandalism. Any 'wanron' vandalism is your fault.

if your only reply is about a spelling mistake that just says enough about you.
