Stephen Fry considers how an alien would see our use of language

The strangeness of offensive language in the eyes of a different culture. Again, fucking Stephen Fry makes so much sense.

Aliens might come down and think war and killing is good. Just a thought.

If you actually think about it, rather than just make an amusing gloss, it makes very good sense that things are as they are. **** is not a synonym for love, it probably comes from a word meaning 'to strike' and is a twisted version of something which ideally should be gentle and good. The worst things you can say are always corruptions of the most idealized ones. If we are religious the worst thing is blasphemy, if we are sensualists the unpleasant aspects of body functions. On the other hand we speak openly of horrible and unpleasant things which do not have this idea of corruption because it helps us to deal with what must be endured.

in short, a tendency to be drawn into a vortex of folding denial. A compulsion to be simultaneously close and apart from core issues that historically are difficult to address openly and honestly. Probably influenced by social norms.

Here's a simple experiment. Think of a common expression containing the word ******* Substitute the word 'love' and then 'abuse'. See which one changes the meaning.

Only if you think love is honestly about abuse. People commonly abuse one another and call it love but that no more makes it so than when a glutton calls himself a gourmand.
