Just prevent most politicians from talking. The hot air savings would be tremendous.

All energy use ends up as HEAT! unless you project that end product into space, none of those ideas will help. And to derive useful energy from something hot, you also need something cold, the efficiency is then related to the difference, so that would be big problem if you're trying to capture ambient hot air temperature as you'd need to find a cold source too which could only be created using air cooling device which inevitably inefficient. Clean energy is the way, prevent G.H.E.

You idiots just don't get it! Alot of really big air conditioners would totally cool off the earth! Like, in Africa. That countries really hot but if they just put like a million giant air conditioners there than the natives would be so much cooler and they could like make an economy and stuff!

Maybe she's not so dumb. We could use the principle of an air conditioner to remove heat from the atmosphere and use that heat to generate more power. I don't think cutting back on energy use is the way forward. We need to focus on producing 100% of our energy cleanly, at which point we can use as much energy as we want without it adversely affecting the climate. Having unlimited clean energy would be very useful in pro-actively cooling the climate, what we'll probably need to do to revert to a more stable climate. I'm no scientist, so I look forward to being shot down.

And we can power the air conditioners with perpetual motion machines!!! Right after we repeal the second law of thermodynamics, why'd we ever make that stupid law anyway?

I didn't say that the air conditioner would be powered by the heat it produced, but that the heat produced would be converted to electricity and added to the power grid rather than canceling out the cooling of the air conditioner. Of course the air conditioner would have to be powered, but once ALL our energy production globally is carbon neutral, then we can use as much energy as we need or can produce - and by then the world will be pretty hot and most probably require some cooling help.

So my question is, at least in theory, is it possible to convert the heat in the atmosphere to drive a car? Or does that heat eventually return to the atmosphere? Surely less heat must return to the atmosphere because a car moved in the process. Or am I misunderstanding some basic physics?

Guest, the idea would violate both the first and second laws. AstroBoy, you can convert work to heat, or heat to work, but you can't do both at the same time. That would violate thermodynamic laws. You can use waste heat from industrial processes to generate power, but always at a net reduction from initial input. The big problem is that heat from air conditioning must go SOMEWHERE. If you could find a way to put it into outer space, that would be the solution. It is theoretically possible to build a heat exchanger with outer space, but probably won't be technically feasible for many, many years.
