Sorry, am I missing something. Are there no such things now as morals? Compare the two men, one intelligent and risking his career (we've seen how Mr Murdoch decides which party shall run the UK what could they do to Hugh) and one trying to justify sleaze and dishonesty as acceptable behaviour. We can't accept this, we can stop buying the trash (I did years ago). Met Mr Grant some years ago. A courteous, thoughtful and interesting man.

(682 days ago)Latest comment: I don't pity HG or SG, but to hack murder victim's mobiles is really going beyond the par and has sullied the name of good journalism in this country. Why people buy the gutter press, I really don't know. The fact is, hacking anything is illegal, therefore everyone involved should be named and shamed and preferably get a prison sentence.

It's a story as old as mankind, the 'race to the bottom' occurs any time an advantage can be had by transgressing or circumventing rules, customs or moral precepts. We see it in war, business, politics, sports, everywhere. You can fight it three ways, law, backed up by rigorous and impartial enforcement (not always feasible and even when i6t is it brings it's own set of problems) opprobrium, as here but that only works after some heinous transgression is exposed and is soon forgot, or by taking away the prize, again not always feasible. In the case of the tabloids, they feed off human nature, fighting them is like the war on drugs, you are never going to win, the best you can hope for is to contain the problem.

The News of the World newspaper is now closing down. I am not sorry to see the back of this odious rag. For years, they have dug into the backgrounds of people who may have had something in their distant past which is better forgotten. The 'journalists' uncover it, splash it sensationally over two pages of their paper and ruin the life of the individual(s) concerned. That type of item is of no merit at all and it's only purpose is to sell more papers and make more money. Who appointed them the guardians of morality? Who asked them to pry into the lives of folks trying to live their lives? And I wonder how many of the reporters' private lives would stand up to the same scrutiny. Murdoch may not be intimately involved in the way the paper has been run, but his hands are as dirty as anyone who does the digging.

I would love to see some of the "journalists" have their lives scrutinized and printed in so called papers for everyone to judge. I am growing very tired of this style of reporting. It seems to have taken over from well reported and thought provoking journalism. 5 second sound bite journalism. Sad
