Sam Harris on psychopathic Christian morality

Sam Harris on psychopathic Christian morality

(11:06) American neuroscientist and well-known atheist Sam Harris points out flaws galore in religious doctrine. Religion would be comedy if it wasn't so serious, and Sam Harris delivers like a dry stand-up. Second video is the full debate, Harris vs. Evangelical Christian apologist William Lane Craig.

In Austria, one guy (an atheist) formed a religion called pastafarians, so that he would be able to wear a noodle sieve on his head when pictures for his drivers licence were taken. he did this to point out the hilarity allowing poeple to wear a headdress out of religious reasons and while forbidding other to wear one while being photographed for official documents

I can prove God's existence in a lot of ways. Anyone care to challenge me? Give me a reason God doesn't exist, and I'll prove that you're wrong. Please be open to the truth, and I will be too.

Thank you Sammy, got a chuckle out of me. Perhaps we should shut our eyes before looking too? Just a friendly word: to keep up the work of winding up the real morons, you need to make sure that your 'bad' spelling is more believable. That is, it's a bit too samey: safior for saviour; while for will etc. By the way, does your 'work' appear anywhere else?

It appears that all atheists think that God is part of the Greek Mythological Gods, in that they use us as living chess pieces and play games with our lives. That is so far from the truth, it's quite ludicrous. If I said to you that God is a 'God' because he abides by all the rules of the universe (thereby creating order), instead of doing what he likes and as and when he likes, knowing full well he is probably able to do so, would that blow your mind? Let’s face it, anything that happens to us, is within the scheme of how we and others live their lives. If we choose to do what we like and when we like (under the liberty of ‘free will’), we cannot expect anything other than chaos in our lives and others, because we are all so inextricably linked as human beings.

"he abides by all the rules of the universe (thereby creating order)". That's it right there. Pure religious thought. One made up statement (he abides by all the rules of the universe), plus one scientific piece (rules of the universe, which humans made up to understand things) = GOD IS GREAT AND REAL.

interesting enough, william lane craig claims there has to be a god as a foundation of objective morality, while the greek that had totally immoral gods were the first to write about morality and virtues, and they did not even relate them to gods, but to man and necessarities of a social living

Why would the ancient Greeks relate morality and virtues to their Gods, if they saw them as immoral? To them, morality and virtues were a human construct to defy their Gods.

Everyone uses the typing mistakes as an argument, while the argument matters more than spelling "religion" correctly.

He wasnt blaming anything bad that happen/s on Christianity he was merely pointing out, in a very calm and well thought out way that you seem to have missed, the hypocrisy inherent in a belief that we are somehow special and blessed and loved by an almighty being while there are terrible things happening to other people in the world.

Latest comment: the truth is, you can not PROVE God doesn't or does exist. It's a faith issue. For me, I believe, I know why I believe. It's incredibly tangible from my point of view. We have free will to make that decision for ourselves. As a believer, what am i missing out on in this life? The faith and belief there is an intimate God i sense and feel, that loves me and wants to spend eternity with me in an amazing place? If it's wrong, I won't know and it won't matter but it's right, boy am I happy. Pride, is a dangerous thing, a block to receiving grace.

Sam Harris lacks the hatred, anger and judgement of Dawkins and Hitchins, and his arguments are cogent. I think this makes him more, not less effective. He is not attacking Christianity, he is merely explaining why he feels it is not tenable. Although I think Harris is attacking points of view that are not held by most Christians, he is not, as some would suggest, poorly informed.

So you're saying that you DON'T have to believe in god in order to go to heaven? Then why be Christian? Or religious at all? I'm a good person and donate to charities (non-religious ones), but I refuse to believe in god. So am I going to hell or heaven and why?

I am not the judge to say where people will go after this life and nobody can say it with absolute certainty. But, if you knew of the exictance of a God who loves you, wouldn't you want to get closer to him?

Natural disasters are ocurring more and more intense and more frequently in the past century and now. There should be a sceintific explanation for that. So please stop blameing God for all the bad things that happens in this world.

There is a scientific for this: global warming. god doesn't exist anymore than Jupiter, Osiris, Inazagi or the Great Turtle do. So they all have NOTHING to do with what's going on because they are fictitious creations. And if I'm wrong then they are malicious beings (all hail the Great Turtle!).

I am an atheist, but I just cannot take what Sam Harris says seriously. Firstly, Sam Harris does not seem to fully understand Christian theology (in particular heaven and hell). Secondly, Sam Harris is attempting to judge God as if he were a person - surprising, given that if God created the universe then he obviously cannot be a person. Thirdly, Sam Harris falls into the trap of generalization - just because some politicians are bad does not mean that the concept of politics is bad and democracy cannot exist, but Sam is saying that because some religious people (or religions) are bad then all religion is bad and God cannot exist, which is just plain bad logic. Come on Sam, you can do better than that - give the scientific evidence against God and let people make up their own minds, rather than trying to convince them with emotional stories of little children dying.
