Do liberals and conservatives think differently?

His point is probably more intrinsic in that a liberal is less prone to even admitting that something disgusts them because they first evaluate whether it will hurt someone else. Homosexual acts hurt nobody (ie no more than heterosexual acts). Yet people vehemently oppose it for no other reason except their own personal feelings.

Most of the people I know self-identify as liberal and few of them think about things that way. Truth to tell most of them define themselves by their antagonism to what they think of as ‘conservative values’ selfishness, greed, irrationality, chauvinism, callousness and bigotry rather than by a guiding principle of their own. Interestingly the self-defined conservatives I know, who are no more noticeably selfish, greedy, irrational, callous or bigoted (they do tend to be more chauvinistic) also define themselves by antagonism to their negative caricature of liberals. I suspect this is the work of the political/media circus making us into hostile tribes so they can garner votes without having to produce effective, efficient government.

Seems likely as far as it goes. That is to say the vast majority of people who are easily disgusted probably think of themselves as conservatives. The problem is 'conservative' is a label used for much more than that, I doubt those are even a majority of all the people who think of themselves as or who are thought by others to be conservative. Likewise only a minority of 'liberals' have the sort of libertarian attitude purported to be their salient characteristic. A banal observation really.

I'm just pointing out the emperor is rather scantily clad. Not profound true, but somebody needs to do it or stuff like this is taken for more than it is, adding weight to people prejudices.

Not as nude as the old chestnut of complaining about labels; you may as well start going on about moral/cultural relativism. This is all based on fairly interesting MRI research into brain structure relationships to political beliefs. Ongoing but firming up nicely.

Latest comment: I suppose it is an improvement on the more traditional psychologist methodology of just making shit up. Whatever value it has still depends on the legitimacy of those labels though.
