Nuclear firepower

How much firepower do nuclear weapons really have? The dot in the centre represents all the firepower of World War II. The other dots represent the firepower of existing nuclear weapons. The top right circle represents the weapons on one Poseidon submarine. It is equal to the firepower of three world wars. This estimation was made in 1982. Today, there will be many more red dots.

Given that WWII gave us the traumatic events at Nagasaki and Hiroshima, and that one sub can cause that damage 3 times over... It's depressing that we live in a world which needs this sort of fire power... and what are we fighting over? Religion (a.k.a. man made fairy tales to control humanity), Money (a.k.a. man made 'favours' to control humanity), Space (a.k.a. a man made problem used to control humanity) And so the US need enough fire power to wipe out the planet, the UK can make far more than a dent... and both go to war against many other countries who decide to build just one missile... I hate humans :(

We DON't need the firepower. If, for arguments sake, Iran launched a Nuclear attack on the US there is zero chance that they would retaliate with a Nuclear strike. They would launch a ground assault and use conventional weapons. They are just a deterent, and frankly not a very good one.

Zero chance? I don't think the Americans (and UK) are stupid enough to spend that kind of money on weapons they had zero intention of ever using. Obviously they HOPE they'll never need them, but they're there for a reason. Plus of all the nuclear countries, the US is the only country to ever use them against people, the only ones not afraid of the consequences...

Latest comment: berk. the stockpile was caused by the cold war. neither side had any intentons to use them but both needed them to ensure that the other didn't.

You had me until your last sentence. The world's nuclear arsenal actually peaked in 1985, and has been steadily shrinking ever since. LINK

Fair enough, and thanks for the link. Today's stockpiles are probably significantly less, maybe even half the dots. Even so, that's still huge.

ok....can we just stop using "a.k.a." as an acronym for "not really understanding a subject, but would support If I could If I think I understand it a little bit???!!!" and agree that killing each other is bad? I'm fairly sure that I probably won't get toooo many down votes there!
