Santorum equates gay marriage equality with polygamy

(2:09) Conservative Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum gets himself into an illogical pickle after a student asks him about his pet hate, gay marriage. Was he just thinking on his feet badly, or does he really believe he actually made sense? Rick Santorum is in close second place in the bid to represent Republicans in the US election 2012.

That student wasn't very bright. All she had to say was YES it is ok for three men to be married as long as it does not hurt anyone.

So it's OK for a brother and sister to get married, as long as they don't have any children?

Finally someone standing up for incest. If enough people did incest I'm sure we would have rights through for that too. Clearly nothing wrong with it.

You asked the question. If no children are involved and both want it then that's their choice. Animals do it and we are animals.

There are obvious reasons and taboos in most societies against incest, different subject. Marriage in the bible actually refers to the marriage between MAN and GOD but has been changed to men men and women. There is nothing in the bible to say men and women must marry.

Guest, you are either working from a different bible, or you don't know your bible very well. Genesis 2:24 (second chapter of the entire book) says that men marry women. God is not mentioned as a marriage partner until much later, and it is used as a metaphor.

Santorum is missing the point. The student is asking about a union between two people, and he is jumping to thinking about three. In logic, this is called a continuum fallacy, which oddly Santorum does not also apply to incest. 16 states already allow first cousins to marry, yet he doesn't seem to worry that soon we will have brothers marrying sisters, but surely that will be the next step. Either that, or dogs and cats, living together....mass hysteria!

I don't think it was that illogical. It seems he was trying to make the audience think about the limits of marriage. If it's OK to expand the types of marriages which are "acceptable" to society, where do you stop this expansion, i.e. where do you draw the line? Who decides what types of marriage are "right" and which are "wrong", or are all types "right" but just for some people? If one person draws the line at one point, then what's wrong with another person drawing the line at a different point?

Exactly, let anyone get married however they wish, if everyone involved consents to it. Marriage should only be viewed as a contract to commit to a relationship, whatever that relationship is. The bible's view on what constitutes a 'normal' marriage is irrelevant as the bible is a fictional story which has no basis in fact and deserves little, if any, respect.

Well since marriage is a biblical institution it seems to be able to define it rather than someone else. If you want to change what marriage is why not just create a new thing and let religious people keep marriage? Just get a civil partnership?

Actually marriage isn't exclusively biblical, many religions have marriage....A civil partnership is still Marriage without religion...Expand, create, re-imagine, whatever. Marriage, as I have stated, is just a contract of a commitment to a relationship, and if all parties concerned consent to it then what's the problem?

This man is a candidate for the PRESIDENCY? Please tell me that he isn't the best that America can find because if he is, and if he is actually elected, the USA will take a massive step backward.

Latest comment: Sadly, although you and Santorum are both idiots, he is actually more politically correct than you in his terminology.
