Russell Brand: Drug addiction should be treated as an illnessRussell Brand: Drug addiction should be treated as an illness

(1:34) 36-year-old comedian Russell Brand, once a heroine addict himself, argues for 'love and compassion' rather than 'carrot or stick' when it comes to dealing with drug addiction. Next video is more from Russell Brand's invitation to the Home Affairs Select Committee on drug addiction.

There are too many people in the world as it is. We should let them die or lock them away. If you are weak, then so be it.

More crosses means that Jesus loves me more than He does you.

Interestingly, one of the biggest street drugs, methamphetamine, was the earliest widely prescribed anti-depressant. There is considerable evidence to suggest that most (not all) addicts suffer from a complex set of adverse social, economic and mental health issues, and that a great many are self-medicating. I agree with Brand, and think that the mental health part of the equation needs attention, rather than always focusing on the criminal part.

He is such a twat.

Most addicts first tried drugs through their own choice. If they have been forced to smoke, sniff, swallow or inject the drug they become addicted to I would have more sympathy for them, but the short term 'high' they get is better than real life and it's that which they insist on chasing - often to the exclusion of all else. Is that a mental illness? I think not. Also, there are plenty of programmes which will help them break their addiction - often, all they have to do is ask.

By decimalizing drug use it cuts out the criminal element therefore cutting out violence and other criminal activity. I smoke weed on a daily bases. I have a full time job a mortgage and a car payment and I vote in every election. I don’t think of myself as a criminal but I’m forced to engage in criminal activity.

"decimalizing drug use" Are you sure you don't mean 'decriminalising'? Maybe the weed has killed a few too many brain cells.

You are a criminal. I hope you get caught and thrown into jail where you belong. It is drug addicts like you who are ruining this beautiful society. You make me sick with your excuse as to why you choose to ignore our laws! Off with his head, take his mortgage, car, and don't allow him to vote ever again; that's what I say!

That my point moron if you have your Christian way I would be in jail and you would have to pay more taxies to keep me there because I would no longer be a member of society. I would be like you a “leach” as it is I pay for school, hospitals, parks and the like. It’s a natural thing that grows in my garden. “It’s not a war on drugs it’s a war on personal freedom. What you do affects me and the Lord will judge you during the end days. You will suffer and it will be justice. As a good citizen, you should respect all of nation's law and not desist into the fetters of criminality. Justice will be served unto you! I hope you get caught!

Guest: Darwin's Radio (418 days ago)
Where did you catch your stupidity?

Guest:  (418 days ago)
schizophrenia is also an illness, and you can't catch it down the street, also cancer, trisomia 21, morbus huntington and a whole array of genetic disorders or illnesses caught through nutrition like diabetes or liver cirrhosis. think 2 seconds before posting next time

Guest: Mix (418 days ago)

Latest comment: Mix, unfortunately, the reply mode allows posters to put their reply anywhere in the thread. My comment about a stupid troll was not directed at you, but at edwin armstrong's original post, and if I am not mistaken, was made before your post. So, regardless of how small my knowledge is, and how much smarter you are than I am, you are mistaken about the nature of my comment.

well, Current medical opinion is that there are a wide range of deseases and afflictions that can not be caught by walking down the streets. Such as acne, mad cow desease and ingrowing toenails. etc etc. Are you suggesting that peaople with these maladies should be treated as criminals instead of treated with medicine ?

Time is infinite -- we cannot run out of time. That's a good one and I'll have to use that myself one day.
