You aren't meant to stop these things from happening. They're part of the planets natural progression. Tyson is a clever man, but in this subject he is very wrong. Without storms, hurricanes and volcanoes the planet wouldn't work.

Well said. Planetary magnetism, air and water cycles, atmospheric and geophysical patterns provide cleaning and distribution services that would cost trillions upon trillions of dollars yearly to operate artificially. If Tyson's vision of controlled weather and geophysical activity ever came true, imagine the nightmare scenarios that would emerge from their development and use, not to mention the mind-boggling, god-like power that would be given to the corporations that would own them.
