Numbers and letters are just representations of what we use to communicate. For something to exist - it has to come into "being" as in a physical form. Therefore, they cannot not 'exist'.

Interesting debate. And like most entirely philosophical debates, it has absolutely no practical use. And it is also completely unproveable, so it's a debate that will never be settled.

This reminds me of the joke where this guy comes to his Rabbi and says "I have lost faith. I've been to school and learned we can logically or prove or disprove anything." The rabbi says, "oh? Can you prove that your nose doesn't exist?" The young man says"oh, that's easy! First we start with Sommeveldt's assumption that...." and before he can go further, the Rabbi punches the young man in the nose and sends him reeling with blood pouring down his face. The rabbi calmly asks, "what hurts?"

At university our 1st year professor started his first lecture with a debate similar to this. "Do numbers exist" We - the unruly and cocky 1st-years then hypothesised with "Well, Dr B, Does that mean that we don't exist either?" He was overjoyed. "You're catching on!!! - Brilliant!!" We went further... "So this lecture isn't happening?" ... "BRILLIANT"... "We're off to the pub then. Seeya" :)

I bet the numbers on his pay cheque exist

Tallant himself would argue that the numbers on his cheque only represent a real thing (money), and that the figures on the cheque themselves represent the numbers, but that there is no abstract thing as the number on his cheque.
