Electric car sets Nurburgring lap record

Electric car sets Nurburgring lap record

(8:23) Markus Winkelhock, driving an electric Audi R8 e-tron, set a world record for a lap on the world's toughest test track, the Nurburgring Nordschleife. Driver's view of that drive, bizarrely quiet except for squealing tyres and wind noise.

Latest comment: It's like his brakes failed and he's free-wheeling down a mountain road - with video speeded up slightly

True, I should've been more precise. It's the fastest lap by a production electric car. The fastest lap record for a road legal car is held by the Radical SR8 (LM Edition), a British sports car made by Radical Sportscars with a time of 6:48.

Correct, but it's probably a world record for an electric vehicle. The record was previously held by a milk float with three AAA batteries.

A lot of electric car manufacturers are actually adding engine noises to electric cars, to aid with audible gear shifting (there's a vid on youtube which shows this)

That is a good point, London1. A lot of the cues for velocity and acceleration are derived from sound, although maybe he can now better hear the contact patch breaking traction.

Woah. That'd take some getting used to. I would've thought that by the time you started hearing that you'd shortly afterwards start hearing your sphinckter give up the ghost as you hurtled towards the armco.
