The end of American debate

The end of American debate

(5:22) For over a generation, shocking cases of censorship in America's colleges and universities have taught students the wrong lessons about living in a free society. This video explains how higher education fails to teach its students to become critical thinkers by supercharging ideological divisions, promoting groupthink, and encouraging an unscholarly certainty about complex issues.

The tort bar lobbies persistently to keep litigation easy and no risk to the complainant. Since the judges and politicians are also lawyers they succeed very well. Lawyers are at the bottom of it, follow the money.

Well what do you know, the video is no longer available - we have really got to watch these people. No wonder so many Americans are so thick and clueless.

Please don't be fooled by this. Lukianoff is a self-proclaimed "free-speech protector." A closer examination reveals that his organization, FIRE, only pursues cases where "liberal" institutions have allegedly suppressed speech (e.g. UC schools).

I've been teaching college for 12 years and I practically beg the students to voice an opinion, _any_ opinion, as long as its founded on sound thinking. Liberalism is based on a diversity of opinions, Conservatism is much more rigid and monotone.

and in the real world. I suspect any of your students who have opinions which are not part of the narrow liberal consensus learn to keep it to themselves. there is nothing diverse about the thinking of "liberals" not nowadays, not anymore

What "narrow liberal consensus?" I've never seen anyone stop an American from successfully proclaiming their opinion on anything. Every other day, someone walks around campus with a picture of a dismembered fetus and a sign that says "Abortion is murder." FOX news, the most popular newstainment channel out there, regularly broadcasts distortions, supposition, and twisted, out-of-context "factoids" and no one censors them. America, as a nation is _way_ to the Right of every other Western country. THAT is the "real world."

im sure your students are fully aware of the consequences of voicing an opinion you dont agree with. Do you realize that you have exactly the closed "consensus liberal" mindset that this video is speaking out against ?

In sincerely doubt it. I teach Physics. When my students voice dissenting opinions, I simply ask them to re-check the math.

if you have, why do you write " i practically beg the students to voice an opinion" above ?. Oddly enough I took a degree in physics and was never asked to voice an opinion during lectures, just to take notes. I call bullshit !

Why would I teach if I wasn't interested in what my students thought about the subject? I already know what I know, but I'm interested to learn what they think.
