Not very bright really (pun intended). What about a light at the back as that's where the vehicle is that's more likely to take you out? I imagine the UCPD is rushed off its feet.

Thats very helpful, but not a single one of those not-so-bright young things was wearing a frikkin helmet! The apparently low velocity of banging your head onto something like concrete from a fall of only four foot can kill you! So why did this cop not make this the main issue? So heres a really simple idea. All cyclists must wear a helmet (like a motorcyclist) by law. AND all helmets automatically come with a basic insurance policy with a minimum of health and third party cover, of course one can opt in to have theft and damage cover added on.. So, no insurance = no cycling, no helmet = no insurance - and you get fined.. Not wearing your insurance/helmet and maybe no lights at night = not covered - and you get fined. NO HELMET - NO BIKE - NO EXCUSES. As for the finer details, I'll leave that one to the more anally inclined amoung you. Btw, I have known two young bright young ladies who died as a result of head trauma, one died instanly as a result of colliding with a pedestrian at low speed and the other collided with a car which pulled up to a junction, a bit too far out into the road, she rolled over the bonnet, not at great speed - she only lasted a week. Niether was wearing a helmet....

I have seen a great many cycle accidents and nobody died (with and without helmets). There is no way of knowing whether your examples would have survived with a helmet or not. There are arguments for and against but they should not be compulsory.

I'm sorry but the statistics speak for themselves.. try this; LINK or this; LINK or this; LINK or this excerpt; A Cochrane review considering five case-control studies from the UK, Australia and the USA illustrates a large and consistent protective effect from cycle helmets, reducing the risk of brain injury by up to 88% and injury to the upper and mid face by 65%(Helmets for preventing head and facial injuries in bicyclists, Thompson et al.. Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 2000) After introducing a helmet law for children under 14, the US state of New Jersey reported that bicycle-related fatalities for that group fell by 60%. For riders over 14, who were not required to wear helmets, the reduction was a mere 5% in the same period. (Trends in Pediatric and Adult Bicycling Deaths Before and After Passage of a Bicycle Helmet Law, Wessen et al) If you think that wearing of a cycle helmet should not be compulsory then i would assume that, despite the evidence for wearing a safety belt in a car, that this shouldn't be compulsory either?

On the contrary I have seen a great many car accidents where the wearing of a seat belt has saved lives. I haven't seen any where not wearing a seat belt has improved the oucome. How many fewer rode cycles because of the compulsory wearing of helmets in your quoted study. Fewer riders equals fewer accidents equals fewer fatalities maybe.

Wow these are the worst bikelights you can get. The quality of light is sh.. and people don't care how the lights are used, they are hanging them in the strap pointing downward. There are a reason why they are illigal to use in civilised countries around the world. They are not exactly the first to hand out lights for free. But the thought is good.
