Latest comment: I guess we shouldn't be too worried about a French man buying a gun - He'd never use it, first sign of trouble he would drop it and run away. But then lets look at the off the cuff figures UK population is 60 Million France has a similar population and the US has 120Million, Gun crime in the UK is relatively huge when you look the number of guns in the UK as a large percentage of guns are in the hands of criminals but tiny in comparison to US. France has a large hunting community and most gun related deaths in France are "hunting accidents" in the US most gun deaths are criminal in nature. Availability of guns increases gun crime. Is the American education system so poor these days that this connection cannot be understood. The rant of "home defence" is pure idiocy as one of the targeted items during robberies and thefts from homes is the Home defence weapon. This puts yet more guns on the streets and the person who's gun was stolen goes and buys a new one or two as they feel even less safe. Another question though is where do gangs get fully automatic, military grade weapons from? Stolen from the military? Most European Gun manufacturers and Military Organisations keep things like guns under lock and key and make them difficult to steal - very few weapons of this type in the UK! American companies rely on a chain link fence and - of course _ armed security guards (on minimum wage ) to keep them safe. FAIL! Lose the guns and lose the crime, it'll take a while and will be costly in dollars and life but worth it in the end. If you don't it won't be long before you are getting served a small calibre handgun instead of a toy in a McD.s happy meal

She recommended a hunting rifle with a scope as self defence? Muggers beware, he can now preemptively pick you off at 800m. Sacrebleu!

I'm sure there MUST be some criteria which excludes the purchase of firearms, so shouldn't the assistant at least be asking for some I.D., proof of residence/citizenship or, as a bare minimum, a picture driving licence before even thinking about weighing this dude out with a rifle?

No way. ANYONE should be allowed a gun, no matter what their background is or whether they're stable, it's in our constitution. That way if EVERYONE has easy and lethal force we are all much safer. The best defence against a mentalist with a gun is a good guy with a gun, so ARM UP people! We're living in a dangerous world.

It would appear that you are in favour of being able to buy a gun simply by presenting yourself at a place such as Wal Mart, making your selection from a range of rifles, shotguns and handguns, paying over the counter and taking a gun home. So, no background checks, no requirement to wait for a few days to cool off after a dispute with the guy whose dog crapped on your lawn......in fact, you are happy to allow everyone, including 'mentalists' (what?) to have weapons. You, sir, are either a prize winning, copper bottomed, gold-plated halfwit or a troll. The jury is out.

Best home defense is NOT living in the USA, where you are likely to be shot for the slightest reason, and then have the shooter claim self defense. Or you can be shot at the movie theatre, or at the mall, or if your a little kid you can be shot at school. American have proved time and again to be morons when it comes to gun control.

How can telling these people, mostly from the UK, to stay out of our country if they don't want the American people to own guns be racist? The majority of the people I'm talking to are probably the same race as me. I'm white and the majority of the UK people are white. LINK

Now you are making assumptions. I love diversity regardless of country of origin, race, or gender. You interpreted a comment to gun haters as me being a bigot. Even if someone in America was anti-guns in America, I would have the same opinion of them. I'd say the same about any American that doesn't want guns here -- they can leave and go to a gun-free country if they want.

Not an assumption, an inference based on comments such as we "will survive just fine without the immigrants" and that immigrants leaving would be doing you a favour. It does seem odd to me that for a country which claims to protect freedom of speech, you would happily deport anyone who disagrees with your stance on guns.

Are you kidding me? This all started with "Yankee Doodle Dandy" commenting saying "Best home defense is NOT living in the USA" so I gave that person the advice to not come to the USA. You guys can think I'm racist or a bigot if you want because I don't care what you think about me. As long as I know who I am, that's all that matters to me.

If all the foreign people in the usa left, then most of your universities would be half empty. Nor would they have enough professors to teach the usaOnly students. Maybe you should think more about who actually drives your crumbling economy before asking those people to leave a country your forefathers murdered so much to keep. I agree with your sentiment btw, it would hasten your horrid countries downfall but your condescending tone is foolish. Oh, and the French are making fun of your silly laws, the FRENCH!! LOL The French can't usually laugh at anybody....

Great attitude! Most of the qualified engineers and scientists in your country are from 'abroad' (http://www.hbs.edu/facul ty/Publication%20Files/09 -005.pdf) With your usual xenophobia, it's amazing such people agree to live there at all. And wasn't there some campaign against that tool Piers Morgan because he voiced an opinion in favour of gun control?! Land of the free?! Such freedom of speech! Talk about brainwashing.

I finally had a chance to glance at your pdf document and I believe you may have misunderstood the percentages listed there. You may want to read that document again. If foreign workers don't want to accept the fact that the American citizens have guns and they have no power to change that, then they can leave. The people left will survive just fine without the immigrants. People from all over the world want to come work in America and that's because it's one of the best places to live and work. We have to shut down our borders to prevent people from coming into our country and working illegally. We also grant a very limited number of Visas for people to work legally here so they don't take jobs away from American citizens. Not just anyone is able to come to America to work. They must be sponsored by a company and that company has to show that there isn't anybody locally that qualifies for the job. Generally speaking, there are people that qualify but they are already hired by other companies so instead of trying to hire within the country by offering competitive salaries, they will go outside the country. It only makes good business sense. Since you're satisfied where you are and have no plans on coming to the USA, you don't need to concern yourself about our gun control benefits/issues.

OK sorry I quoted the wrong figure - the one listed in the article is actually 47%, that is US scientists and engineers working at a doctorate level who were foreign born, and 67% was the increase of such foreign workers compared to native-born. So still, that's nearly half of all your top engineers and scientists. I really don't think that having a strict immigration policy proves much - European countries also have entry requirements and visa schemes, yet the open hostility towards foreigners is much rarer. Every country relies on foreign workers to a greater or lesser extent, especially the USA which openly admits to have shortages of H1B skilled professionals. Yes, I am satisfied where I live. However, I like many others consider myself to be a global citizen. If a country refuses to take action when its policies result in the regular massacre of innocents, especially children, I do believe it to be the responsibility of other nations to begin to apply certain pressure. Sadly, we can't change things, we can't protect your children where you are incapable of doing so yourselves, but we can hope to point out the ludicrous, outdated and callous nature of your policies and hope that one day you get sick of school shootings and rampages. The rest of the world live in hope that you'll catch up sooner rather than later.

I still think that was misunderstood. The sentence says, "In terms of levels, immigrants represented 24% and 47% of the US SE workforce with bachelors and doctorate educations in the 2000 Census, respectively." I think that means that out of 100% of the US scientist and engineer immigrants, 25% of them had bachelor degrees and 47% of them had doctorate degrees. I could be wrong so I looked up another source and a more up-to-date document says this, "In 'STEM' occupations (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), the foreign-born account for 26.1 percent of workers with PhDs and 17.7 percent of those with master’s degrees." LINK "There is full employment among U.S.-citizen STEM workers with advanced degrees." Since all the US workers with these qualifications are already employed, that's why Visas are given out to foreign workers. If we had a great deal of unemployment at those levels, we would cut off the foreign immigration.

I think the sentence is pretty clear; that 24% of scientist/engineers with bachelors are foreign, and 47% of such workers with doctorates are foreign. Anyway, whichever figure you use, whether it's 47% from the above or 26.1% from your source, it still shows a massive and disproportionate number of your top science and engineering professionals are from other countries. Nothing wrong with that at all, but it does rather fly in the face of the your rather stereotypical American view that the USA can "survive just fine without the immigrants" and that immigrants leaving would be doing you a favour.
