Isn't that the problem with ideology? An ideology is a set of static political ideas that only match a continually changing reality by coincidence. So when cengland0 says he's a libertarian and therefore believes in small government, what if bigger government actually works better? Sticking with ideology means you can't adapt when things around you change, or when new evidence comes in. Surely it is better to set goals and then choose the best method to get there irrespective of what ideology it coincidently resembles. Otherwise, isn't it like "God told Noah..."?

Islam is an ideology combined with religion, and it will always work as long as most people will choose to believe in magic rather than science, that's what the elite of that part of the world found a long time ago. Top that if you can. American elites figured that out eventually and invented the Christian tea party. Ideologies, in my opinion, are used and always have been used by the elites to control the masses; as long as there are 2 conflicting ones, there will be circus, and you know what they say about bread and circus... That being said, i consider myself a social democrat (but i would love that Iran thing that we talked about some time ago) , which i think it's what most conservative AND progressive people are in mainland Europe. In mainland Europe, as far as i know, a liberal is that person that supports the same agenda that the american tea party is promoting: deregulation, small government and less taxes... everyone on "their own... that "laissez fair" attitude. They don't really mention god as often as the Americans; if they were to do that they'll get mocked out of every parliament... so I've heard.

Well you have huge govt. now and look where you are, in unpopular wars I think most disagree on, most of your basic rights eroded...this is where Big govt. always goes, more power to them and those connected and less power to the people. This is ALWAYS the case. The fundamental problem is the lack of the rule of law and property rights. Under a libertarian govt. these two things are the main duties of govt. ideology is different from things we know to be true as demonstrated time and again through history and experience. God help us if govt. ever does decide to do something about climate change, you can be sure it will involve trillions of taxpayers money, all the wrong solutions and the usual suspects will become richer and everyone will clamour for govt. to do something about it...

I didn't say big government is better. I said "what if?" - the point being - if a better solution goes against your ideology, then you're screwed if you are not prepared to change your ideology. A better example might be healthcare. The French system is often considered the best in the world. But because it is government run, libertarians would dismiss it even though the evidence is against them.

You give one example of health care...care to ask a New Zealander, English or Canadian what they think? The American version coming soon looks like disaster in the wings. The trouble is govt. writes laws and rules without realising the full extent of what they are doing, the consequences and fallout. A fine example would be higher taxes on the rich, it drives them away in search of a better deal so not only do you get lower taxes but less jobs, less sales, etc. look at france!

You've just made my point exactly. Instead of looking at healthcare, you've immediately concluded that government should not be involved because it goes against your ideology. I could say private enterprise should not be involved in healthcare because the banks have shown what the smell of money and power does. That would also be putting ideology first.

Latest comment: Do not force the corporations to provide their employees with healthcare benefits. Let the free market decide and the employees will seek out the jobs with the best pay and benefit package for the skills they have. The government should stay out of everything except national defense. Let the states provide local police and everything else is privatized and the free market will resolve everything else. What we are finding now is that employers are terminating full time employees and hiring back part timers at 29 hours or less to avoid the new healthcare laws. So who is this hurting in the long run? Think everyone will now get healthcare because the government created this new law? Nope, the companies will work around these laws and citizens will be hurt in the long run by cutting hours and not providing healthcare either. Now fewer people will be able to make it to the middle class because they cannot get enough hours. My doctor friends are telling me it will hurt their business too and many people graduating and looking for a new career path will not choose to be medical doctors so we will have a shortage of doctors eventually. We will then have to start our own version of patient stacking like you guys in the UK already experience.

He's a very clever guy who obviously thinks deeply and seems to have much to which Americans, in particular, should listen. Why don't they?

- or why not just opt for 5 minutes of flag waving and the mindless 'U.S.A.' chant? That gets trotted out when there's nothing intelligent or relevant to say (which is pretty often) but at least everyone knows the words.

God promised no more floods. However he didn't say anything about fire. As a matter of fact I believe my Bible says the world is reserved for fire.
