Why are American health care costs so high?

Why are American health care costs so high?

(7:53) Vlogbrother John Green discusses the reasons why the US spends so much more on health care than any other country, and on route reveals some surprising facts, including that Americans spend more of their tax dollars on public health care than people in Canada, UK, or Australia. What's going on?

Simple explanation: rampant, libertarian capitalism. State should provide equal education (including higher), healthcare, infrastructure for all; nationalise/regionalise all public transport and communications; regulate all financial services; invest in technology, innovation. After all that's in place, then it's capitalism's turn.

famine and bankruptcy? you have to thank the capitalist banking cartels for that, controlling the elected officials of the superpowers, making them fight proxy wars in third world countries. If i recall correctly, it was in the 70's that social and financial reforms implemented by Roosevelt after the capitalist crash of the 1930's , were eliminated, and it was in the 70 that the OPEC cartel closed the oil "tap". Little to NO capitalist candidates were elected in those poverty stricken countries, instead puppet dictators were appointed by capitalist superpowers to ensure resource stability, extremely necessary for the security of financial assets.

trofim lysenko's theories (backed heavily by stalin) have been credited with directly causing a series of famines in soviet russia, china, and north koria. he probably caused more direct deaths of socialists and communists than any other person, and was definitely a major contribution to the west winning the cold war. On second thoughts you are right, he did make the world a better place by sabotaging the ussr and china

no i'm talking about the self imposed ideological overriding of science which led to a series of self inflicted famines on the uss and later on china and north koria .Nothing to do with capitalism and effective in limiting the ussr beyond the west's wildest dreams. ps the capitalist countries were good enough to sell their surplus grain to the ussr otherwise the famines would have been far worse. Its all in the history books, but as you have a sub-standard brain i suppose you wont have the ability to understand it. ps you probably also need to know the fundamentals of genetics as well,ps look up lamarckism, (called michurianism in the soviet union) but i suppose this is dependant on your sub-standard brain as well

those are a lot of PS'es. But you have it all wrong (which is what i expected) You are confusing Communism with Socialism. Learn the difference before trying to put the bad decisions of a megalomania-cal dictator on the back of an ideology such as socialism (which is exactly the same thing as Stalinist communism to any self-respecting defender of capitalism). And what's with the gratuitous insults?

im sorry its so easy to group communism and socialism together, mainly because communist do tend to refer to themselves as socialists ie as referenced in the name "union of socialist soviet republics". but unfortunately for socialism, when it is implemented it does always seem to end up in a cult where the people are forced to worship a meglomaniacal glorious leader, of which there are so many examples.

if you think, finland, sweden, denmark, germany, france and the majority of the European and South American countries are worshiping a megalomaniacal leader, you have another thing coming your way. Most countries in the world have a "Social Democracy" party and most of the countries in the world have implemented socialist policies (in one way or another) such as: universal healthcare, nationalization of the water supply, energy, even oil production, etc. Social democracy is way better than rampant libertarian capitalism. In fact, socialism and democracy are almost synonyms; democracy: a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections. Socialism: a theory or system of social organization in which the means of production and distribution of goods are owned and controlled collectively or by the government. When it comes to Capitalism, the government and the economy is controlled by whoever has the most CAPITAL, which is an unfair practice. Look into social-democracy LINK

socialism's day is done. Its finished, kaput, dead. gone to the graveyard of failed political creeds and pushing up the daisies. and yes i'm not stupid I do know the difference, but it looks like social democracy is dying too, we are running out of other people's money, you see what you fail to understand is that companies haved learned to be mobile .they not going to stand still and be taxed into oblivion. they will simply move production. No taxes means no social democracy.

yup, that's capitalist globalization for you: create cartels of banks and corporations, buy the politicians, start proxy wars or "coups d'etat" (with the help of the secret service) through the politicians that you bought ,to get control of the resources of other countries, set in place some "oligopoly friendly" politicians in the conquered territories, create trade agreements, move the factories in the third and second world countries with which you now have trade agreements and get those politicians that you previously bought to instate a police state in your own country to keep the masses from rebelling. Yup, sounds about right! Rampant libertarian capitalism trying to kill social democracy... but the trouble is... information and education: if things don't start changing for the better FOR THE MASSES you'll have a whole new "french revolution" but this time, it's going global. Honey, you ain't seen nothing yet. You might want to switch sides before it starts.

that would be great if we were wild beasts, but we are human beings and we are able to think, to gather in groups, to increase our chances for survival. It's how humans came to rule the world. You have Darwinism up to a certain point and that point is the development of language; after that the total is greater than the sum of the parts. Development of language in our case, is information, education and internet, that's why we see all of this propaganda flying around. Soon enough people will know for themselves what are lies and what is truth.

that is a very simplistic view of humanity. Humans are animals but not just that; humans are social animals, humans are the dominant species on earth and we became that because we learned to work together for the benefit and safety of all the members of our tribe. As society evolved, the tribe expanded to become the village, and then the town, the city, the state, the federation, etc. We, the humans, are more than just another species of animal, We are THE animal. Learn more about humans and human nature by looking into sociology and psycho-sociology. Here's a interesting and short read LINK

I never mentioned altruism. Altruism has nothing to do with it. Of course socialists are selfish, but unlike other people we think that we have much more to gain by living in a social-democratic society than in one characterized by rampant libertarian capitalism. We think that the chances for our success in life are much greater in a social-democratic society than in a society where the strongest, most powerful and richest members decide the destinies of all other. I don't know what was the point that you were trying to make. If anything, social-democracy is a more intelligent way of being selfish than the libertarian way of being selfish (everybody on their own, may the strongest survive. We might as well build a Thunderdome).

you might have a point there, seeing that right now socialism applies only for the corporate cartels, with their subsidies, tax breaks, bailouts, rigged markets, custom made laws and lobbying (which is legalized bribery)... one wonders if capitalism(the way capitalists describe it) ever existed? However, this is not poker, this is the future of our children and even if you win this bet you and your children still lose. We like intelligent people on our side so why don't you give our cause a thought, after all... social-democracy is the smartest type of selfish there is.

We like intelligent people on our side so why don't you give our cause a thought, after all... social-democracy is the smartest type of selfish there is.

socialism and social-democracy is finished unless we adopt eugenics (the fabian socialists weren't stupid you know, they foresaw this situation). and we are being swamped by non producers. ps I dont make the world, I merely observe.

communism is finished (almost) because most of the communist parties in the world are no longer or are unpopular, however, Social-democracy isn't finished as you can see from this list of parties LINK . Social-democracy just lost terrain in the past decade because the corporate propaganda machine pushed for libertarian deregulation all over the globe through lobbying, and it brought the world into economic recession. You can see from the numerous riots in europe and other countries that the people are fed up. Social-democracy is alive and it's getting ready for a comeback. I'm surprised you didn't observe that. For how much longer do you suppose the "proletariat" will tolerate the current situation? I'll give it till 2020. And i have to emphasize the following: the corporations hijacked socialism and they're keeping it for themselves. What kind of capitalism is this in which the biggest corporations and financial institutions benefit from tax breaks, subsidies and custom made laws? it doesn't look like a free market, does it? it looks a lot like socialism for the rich and rampant libertarian capitalism for the poor.

you don't seem to be denying anymore that social-democracy is a morally superior political ideology to libertarian-capitalism, even though you might think it's never going to succeed. Am i wrong? And you seem to be unwilling to address the fact that Socialism has been hijacked and monopolized by the rich and powerful in the detriment of all other, the same rich and powerful who are buying up the media and who sponsor propaganda disinformation campaigns to convince the public that socialism and social-democracy is a bad thing... About Blair and Brown... it's called corruption... they are nothing more than puppets.

you seem obsessed with the appearance of being morally superior, may i suggest that the germans who voted for the nazi party which after all was both a socialist and a green party also considered themselves morally superior at the time. the road to hell is paved with godd intentions.

i would love it if you could prove me wrong but you either can't or you're unwilling to do so, and i think you just made my case with that last comment of yours. "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" goes both ways.

Thats the way the world works, unfortunately its better than all the forms of socialism. ps when you think about it,do you think the oil companies want fracking and nuclear to work, (cheaper competing source of fuel) they are playing you like a violin, and as for renewables, by and large a complete waste of time, money, and energy, you just have to look at the figures.

" its better than all the forms of socialism" nope, it's just that all the forms of socialism have been sabotaged from the inside by corrupt amoral individuals (such as tony Blair, who changed the definition of socialism in the labour party in Britain). Capitalism keeps working because it founded on the selfishness greed of individuals and since groups are made of individuals, capitalism will always find a way to sabotage any other form of governing and it will continue to call itself the best. And yes, oil companies have a way to get interconnected with all other giant corporations and financial institutions, so yes Oil&gas companies do have an interest in fracking, and not so much in renewable and nuclear. Financial institutions find themselves in a pickle if the vicious circle of debt isn't perpetuated and what better greater loans can be made if not those for corporations? they're all in it together to bastardize our democracy through corruption and cartels. Now THAT's the TRUE face of capitalism!
